View Full Version : Too low score in 3Dmark05 for my new 7800GTX

I bought a new system recently, and i'm not very happy with the 3Dmark05 score ...

My new rig is a P4 650 3.4Ghz, Asus P5WD2 Premium, Corsair 2x 512MB DDR2 sdram PC5400 (675Mhz) 4-4-4-12, an Asus en7800GTX 256MB, and a Tagan 580W PSU. This isn't the highest end PC, but it sure isn't medium. With all this at stock speeds I'm only getting 4900 points in 3Dmark05 - P4 @ 3.4Ghz, 200FSB, 333Mhz memory, and GPU @ 430/1200.

When I overclock - what I believe to be a fairly high overclock - my p4 is running at 4.088Ghz, 235FSB, 400Mhz memory, and GPU at 515/1315Mhz (actually 550+ for the core, but 515 via Coolbits) and I'm getting a 8288 score in 3Dmark05. That's roughly what my rig should be doing at stock speeds! With this kind of overclock I should be smelling the 10K range ...

I've checked and tried everything, a,nd I can't find the bottleneck. Here's a non-exsaustive list:

- installed all drivers correctly, using Forceware WHQL 81.98 now - tried with other older versions too.
- Chipset drivers (Intel chipset software) is installed correctly too.
- GPU is on the PXIexpress 16x port, so says Cpuz and Lavalys
- Speedstep is disabled in the bios, it's really running at 4 Ghz (aircooled zalman 7700)
- temperatures are high but not too high, well within limits ... P4 @ 4Ghz does 60/65C, GPU @ 515/1315 does 63/67C. temps at stock are 39C for the P4 and 50C for the GPU.
- nothing is throttling, every program is reporting the correct speeds (Rivatuner, CPUz, WCPUid, sandra, etc etc)
- Fully update Windows XP Pro 32bit with directX9.0c, no programs running in the background when benchmarking, only about 17 processes active after boot.

a 8288 score in 3Dmark05 is way to low for an overclocked 7800gtx rig, no?

Does anyone here has a golden tip as to where the bottleneck could be?
Please, ask me questions, I'll reply and hopefully we will discover the problem ... thanks in advance.

Well, I'm sure that there is something wrong there. I have an almost identical rig and my stock score was around the 7K range I think. I'll run them again when I get home today and post them so that you can compare. I'm not sure that you'll be hitting 10K with a 256MB GTX, but I'm pretty sure you should be well over 9K.

I ran some more benchmarks, and something isn't quite right here ...

3Dmark2001 st: 13.431
3Dmark2001 oc: 27.886 (http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=8835915)

3Dmark03 st: 12.426
3Dmark03 oc: 18.661 (http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k3=4494384)

3Dmark05 st: 4761
3Dmark05 oc: 8288 (http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm05=1594063)

St is stock is P4 @ 3.4Ghz, 200Mhz FSB, DDR2 @ 666Mhz and GPU 430/1200
oc is overclocked, P4 @ 4.08Ghz, 240Mhz FSB, DDR2 @ 720Mhz and GPU 515/1340, Higher overclock gives artifacts (no crashes)

Double the score from stock speeds to overclocked for 2001 and 2005? Does anyone here has some similar results for their system?

Argh! What is causing my low score! :)

In my opinion its your cpu thats holding you back.

umm....not on topic there chief.

It looks like it's not actually running at "stock clocks". Have you tried manually setting the GPU/RAM clock to 430/1200? As low as the score is at "stock", it looks like the GPU may be running at 250MHz......

Removed that 81.95 CRAP driver, and installed that new 82.12 ....

at stock speeds I'm getting a fairly OK 7174 score! I'm a bit tired to overclock and benchmark today, so I'll test this driver with a beefy overclock tomorrow!!

You may have been having a driver error of some kind. My score is 7103 on the 81.95 drivers.

I'm glad the new drivers fixed your problems. (xmassign)

Just as a reference for you selder2, I just ran 3DMark05 and got 7975 with the following system.........

P4 660 3.6GHz @ stock
XFX 7800GTX @ stock 450/1250
Gigabyte GA955X Pro motherboard
2GB (2x1GB) Corsair DDR2 533
Forceware 81.98

I also got virtually the same score with the 81.95 driver.

Overclock your CPU to 4Ghz and leave your GPU at stock

default, a non-oc 7800GTX should get around 7700

Hmmm, they are low. With a single GTX, I was getting 25,000 in 3Dmark2001, 17,500 in 3Dmark03 and 8,500 in 3Dmark05. That was with a stock X2 3800+ chip.

There has to be a setting that you are missing.
