One of my friends with a 360 told me not to play my 360 upright. He said that some people who play with their systems standing up, get a buncha problems. He said unless I have a warranty, I should leave it on its side.

The only thing that can cause problems is when you change its position from vertical to horizontal (or vice versa) with a spinning disc in it.

when our 360 is in my room i always have it vertical, and havent had a single problem. There is the issue of tilting it while its on as CrazyIvan said, no bueno para el disco

It's fine vertical. Just don't be a dumbass and move it around with a spinning disc in it.

Well I was just gonna have it horizontal but I dont have room except next to my sub and it would probably get kicked by me or my chair constnatly, so thats no good. I can only have it vertically, as far as the warranty, if something does go wrong... does MS repair it and charge me or what happens?

The unit was DESIGNED to be vertical or horizontal. It's covered if it breaks.

I'd be more worried about having the thing next to a Subwoofer. Most subwoofers are not shielded. Might not be too good for the HD.
The rumors originate from the known issue of tilting the console while the disc in the drive is spinning.
The drive in the Xbox360 lacks of a set of rubber bumbers that prevents the disc from moving due to gyroscopic effect if the console is moved while playing. The result is that the disc hits the pickup assembly while spinning at high speed resulting in a neat circular scratch.
While common sense dictates not to move your console around while playing (also usual bad for hard disks) it would not have ruined Microsoft to include those rubber bumpers. While the Xbox360 is clearly designed to stand upright, its drive is a low cost PC part with little attention to details like this.
I read somewhere that the system is more silent in the horizontal position.
I just switched mine from being in the horizontal position to the vertical and havn't had any issues. Of course, I don't plan on trying to pass the system around the room while it has a disc in it...:p
I think it looks more attractive stading upright. :D

I never understood while people wanted to stand it upright... it is so much easier to tip over that way :(.

My reason is simply because when people walk into my house they notice it more quickly...I know, I know...

Well my 360 would be stnaidng in between my case and a piece of furniture, so it wouldnt be able to fall.
Actually, I use to strap the 360 to my back while using it but I kept getting bad scratches on my discs...(nana2)

i have mine on a stand that has little slots for cd cases on the side (vertical)
yea i think it may be quieter in the horizontal position becuz of the loud cd-rom drive...

unless you have a stolen system shouldn't you have a warranty?

3 months is now the defacto standard for electronics in the US.
