View Full Version : Venice really a Winchester or BIOS bad reporting?

I just bought the K8N Neo2 Platinum with a supposed "CPU AMD Athlon 64 3200+ BOX soc. 939 Venice" to go with it, everything seems to be alright but CPU-Z says the CPU is a Winchester!? Did I get fooled by the retailer or is it something else, perhaps to be fixed by a newer BIOS for this board?

Currently I'm using the default 1.5 BIOS...

Which version of CPU-Z are you using?

I'm using v1.31 which is the latest I think. The latest Sandra is reporting a Winchester as well, so this doesn't look good... :(

For the heck of it, update your bios. Venice cores weren't out when that board came out, if I recall.
It shouldn't matter because it pulls that info from the proc itself, right?

If it still says Winchester then it's return/exchange time if you were set on a Venice. :(

Does Sandra detect SSE3 capabilities on your CPU? If it does it's a real Venice. You can also the AMD detection utility.

Agreed the winchester does not include sse3 instructions...the venice does(nana2)

BIOS updated to 1.B, Winchester still on:(

No SSE3 either. Exchange time, right.

If you can yank your chip out, then you can know for sure.

If the number ends in "BI" it is for sure a Winchester. I can't remember the exact code for Venice.... I think its AS... not sure. But if its BI its definetely a Winchester.

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/terry_butler/opn-462/ Here is a AMD processor identifier, save you yanking it out.But no SSE3...it's not a Venice:D Crooked computer shop...dont go back there.

also, make sure they advertised it as a venice. if they advertised it as a 90nm process, then it could be either.

however, if they said it was a venice, and yours is indeed a winchester, definitely return it.

Thanks for all your advices, I will try to return it on Monday when they are open.

Well, these guys were surprisingly helpful (for this being Slovakia :D ) and offered to exchange the CPU for a Venice right away. The guy said he had also no idea it wouldn't be a Venice when they first ordered the piece.

Now, I have a somewhat different problem with my CPU, see
