View Full Version : SLI cooling suggestions using a 120mm fan?
I've relaised that my case has bad airflow and I can't really fix it becuase... it just wasnt' meant to be! So I need to find some way to cool off my GTX SLI.
I was thinking I could open up all the PCI bracket things and then put a 120mm fan there and exhaust air from that spot - though I'm not sure if that would affect the proper low front intake to rear upper exhaust airflow thing. Also, would it possibly be better to simply place a fan on top of them somehow? and blow down towards the motherboard?
I have this spare 120mm or 92mm fan and I was hoping to get some use out of them! I just don't know where to put them..
My case is an antec p180

You have bad airflow with an Antec P-180? Do you have fans in all of the slots? If you have the VGA cooling duct, remove it and leave it out. The case actually cools better without it.
As far as the 120MM fan, you should actually use it to blow air IN through the slots as (most) the 7800GTX coolers pull air in from the rear and exhaust out through the front.
I included my setup in my sig.. the PSU has tons of wires.. I already have one SATA only wire stuffed under the PSU.
I'm wondering if a 120mm fan can span enough pci slots to blow air in for both cards.. I think it can. I might switch my evga standard heatsink for a vf700 and then I'm sure a 120mm fan would help it (no warranty problems because evga allows changing heatsink).
I have intake 120mm nexus silent. and top/rear tricools at medium.. I just have a lot of stuff and it's oc'd so it gets really hot
I was thinking of getting an Antec P180 case for my SLI setup but now I stumble upon this thread. After all I've read about the P180 case, I cannot imagine it has bad airflow. Wasn't that thing designed for this sort of thing?
I must tell you. I just redid my entire computer setup (wiring etc) and I changed the stock chipset fan on my board.
My vid card max oc went from 490/1340 to 515/1390 in SLI!! and the tests are passing percectly fine.. no artifacts etc. The big problem I had was wiring.. the 700w psu has tons of fat wires and there's just no where to put them really.. I just made a huge effort and now my case works perfectly!! I also opened the 2 pci slots besides my video card to let air flow in!
So.. I vote for this case!! just know that managing the psu wires is DIFFICULT

Actually I think its rather easy to manage wires in the 180, hiding them is another story.
I have pretty decent temps, but I added a slim 120mm fan to the lower chamber removed the middle 120mm dan from the middle section of the lower chamber and placed that one in the middle of the case and I also removed the middle HD rack.
Have a look see
