Though it is unclear what kinds of network services Sony is planning, Kutaragi said that he sees the PS2 as a new distribution system for music and movies. Sony Music Entertainment Japan's CEO Shigeo Maruyama told IDG News Service that his company is readying Internet music services for the PS2, but he would not provide details.

Sony did not have working models of the PS2 on hand at the packed announcement today and instead focused on the machine's design.

I don't hate Sony. I pimp their displays at any chance I get as the best in the world. Only thing I buy.

I don't think the PS3 will suck either, I just think Sony needs to STFU about it being the "true HD gaming device" and trying to redefine all standards. Sony is claiming 720p and 1080i aren't HD and it drives me nuts. I should call and ask for a refund on every Sony HDTV I have purchased for false advertising. Their hypocracy is rediculous. Sony doesn't even MAKE a TV that will accept a 1080p signal yet. They have 1080p displays that upscale everything, but you can't even feed the damn thing 1080p! But the PS3 is the ONLY HD gaming console in existence according to Kutaragi. I hate Sony's console hype machine with a passion is all.

As far as buying one, I probably won't. I never bought a PS2 since it was drastically inferior to the Xbox as proven by cross platform games such as Splinter Cell. The anime porn game design style found on PS2 games also doesn't interest me. I think Japanese games suck and the PS2 is where most of those devs are.

Sony may not have delivered on some of those things they said when they were trying to hype and sell the system to the world but the PS2 has delivered in spades when it comes to quality games. After all its the games that count and I think it should be judged on that more than anything.

I think it really doesnt matter what Sony or MS or Nintendo say in the run up to launch. The hardcore will buy the systems at launch anyway, and the non-harcore (the majority) will see the games and decide accordingly. What I'm saying is who cares what Sony say.

I think Sony's biggest strength last round was initial exclusivity on GTA games and total exclusivity on Squaresoft FF games. This may not happen this time around. I have heard Rockstar will simultaneously release the next GTA game on both platforms. I also am already playing FF XI Online in a free beta thanks to OXM. Unless Sony can match MS's Xbox Live, which will be hard to do since Microsoft has a HUGE headstart and basically invented REAL online console gaming, the multiplayer factor will decide the winner.

Microsoft's Marketplace and Xbox Live arcade is also a huge hit, I wonder what Sony will do match or attempt to exceed this.

Got a link? From what ive heard it's still supposed to be exclusive, for how that exclusive deal lasts is anybodies guess. (my guess is around the same length as gta:sa)

I'm sorry. I just don't agree with this.

Sony had the widest spectrum of games and good quality ones. I will agree that it also had more duff ones though.

XBOX games were focused on specific genres - Action (Splinter Cell, Ninja Gaiden), FPS (Halo, Chronicles of Riddick etc), Sports (Everything EA and other sports sims - I know Sony had these too, but most of the time they were better on XBOX), and a couple of good racing franchises which Sony matched or beat all the way until Forza came at the end of XBOX's life. It had few notable RPGs, Fable was good and SW:KotR, but definitely not a range.

Sony on the other hand had the Anime market owned. It couldnt beat Nintendo in quality of platformers but they were most definitely a bigger range and better quality than XBOX ones. It had all the Pro Evo/Winning Eleven Soccer games first, which is huge seller in this part of the world. It had all the Dance Dance Revolution type games, and various other musical or rhythm influenced games. It owned in terms of traditional RPG and Action RPGs. It had Tekken, which MS can't compete with really. DOA may have had nicer graphics but Tekken is clearly a better game. Soul Calibur is a moot because they were almost exactly the same.

I love how yall are trashing cell. when in fact the cell chip itself is semi revolutionary.In fact the cell architecture is what pushed the pc higher ups to make dual cores the standard this year. As sony started to try to strong arm its way into the server business.

I find that tekken 5 is one of the best fighting games ever created (right after street fighter alpha 3 for the DC), these are our opinions and we should leave it at that.

We have shifted topics so much, from ps2 hype, to ps2 vs xbox, to ps2 game quality, to tekken 5. I really dont see the point of this thread.
