I don't know what came over me but I bought WoW. I mean it is almost midnight and I just got out of work and I just thought to myself "hey I'm going to buy World of Warcraft". So there I went: almost midnight to my local Meijers and bought the last copy. For the record, I've never played an MMORPG before and I know nothing about Wow except the little I remember about the old Warcraft games. I got a bad feeling that I'm going to end up being one of those people that get deadly addicted to this game. :o
EDIT: Argh! Game takes forever to install!!!
Welcome to the dark side. Hope you like it, because you're gonna be here awhile :firedevil

WoW is like the equivalent of "MMORPGs for Dummies"
Wait for Vanguard to come out. Thats going to be a REAL MMORPG. Along with the likes of Everquest 1 and Dark Age of Camelot.
The rest are just... meh

WoW is a very very fun game. I made it to level 60 as a mage, and I was in a guild running Molten Core raids for epic gear.
I quit about 6 months ago becasuse I was wasting WAY to much of my life playing this game.
very fun game....Ive started running MC with my guild about 3 weeks ago. It can seriously eat away some time, but Im at the point of the game where I can just login on raid nights and play for 3-4 hrs then leave for a couple days.

I'm in the same boat, I went to wash my moms car and decided to stop by Gamestop and I saw WoW sitting on the shelf. I said why the hell not?
This game is extremely addicting!
I spent like 3 hours just exploring, HUGE environments, Gryphon Rides are awesome!
Needless to say, I will be playing this game alot...
I'm on the Khaz Modan server, Roliath.
Oh yeah, my dad thinks its hilarous that I play WoW on my Rig...
"All that money and you play this," is what he keeps telling me..

Just be ready for server issues. Which means Bliz does a maintinance on Tuesdays but pretty much the servers are out of commission from midday monday to mid day wedsneday. Lag and minor rollbacks usually starts monday, servers are down for tuesday most of the day, tuesday nights are usually full of lag, unable to connects and disconnect and wed is usually back to just being laggy...Just a heads up. Rest of the week is smooth sailing.
you must be on a bad server....Frostwolf sometimes has issues usually right after maintanence but they are generally cleared up by primetime.

WoW is more like the equivalent of "MMORPGs that are actually good games".
GLX I think you will really like this game. It doesn't really play like other MMORPG games. In other words, it's not completely pointless.
BTW just got my Legplates of Wrath last night *woot*.

Apparently you have never played a good MMORPG. This is common knowledge that WoW isn't really a good MMO. It can't hold a candle to the likes of Everquest 1 and Dark Age of Camelot.
What WoW is good for is that it is bringing MMO's mainstream. Well... i guess thats not a good thing when you think about it....

I can't stand MMORPGs. WoW is the only one I enjoy. This is because most other MMORPGs are boring crapfests, in my opinion. If it's such common knowledge that WoW isn't a good MMO, you should have trouble explaining its extremely high review ratings and enormous subscriber base. Or are you saying that your opinion of what makes an MMO good is absolute and all-encompassing?

So I guess the answer to my question is "yes". Elitist snobs FTW!

yes and you are stating what everyone else states. While what you said is fine and good, WoW really isn't a good MMORPG. I love Blizzard to death but its not. I'm not argueing with you, but I do ask that you go to www.vanguardsoh.com and just take a look at the forums. I am willing to bet 50% of the people on those forums do in fact play WoW. Even though they play WoW, most all of them agree that it is not a very good MMO.
Like I said, I can't argue with you and make you change your mind. Maybe you can do some of your own research and find out for yourself. ;)
My only issue with wow was the boring end game and all the "Blizz kiddies".
WoW is a very exceptional game. It is one of few games that will give you a truly 'massive' feeling about the world. I would highly recommend fully checking out the servers and faction balance before committing to anything. Warcraftrealms.com (http://www.warcraftrealms.com/) can you show you that basic info, just keep in mind it's not 100% accurate.
I also have found that Horde tends to be the better faction as it has less kiddies just wanting to look at a hot night elf hunter named 'Legolass' or some variation. Horde also tends to be the lesser populated side, which means less immature asshats. I have also found that PvP servers tend to have better skilled players because they have had to 'stay on their toes' during leveling instead of being in easy carebear mode on a PvE server.
Lastly, check out ui.worldofwar.net (http://ui.worldofwar.net/). You WILL need mods to be able to properly participate in end game raiding. Only a few would probably be required, and you will definetly see more that you will like to use that are class specific or a UI mod. Ctmod (http://www.ctmod.net/) is the must have mod IMO. They are all easy to install and remove if you don't like or need.
Good luck and have fun with that massive time-sink. :P
man this thread is old haha.
Im still chipping away at endgame raiding. Im in a new guild now, we have BWL on farm, AQ40 to twin emps and have cleared instructor in Naxx.

Don't even compare DAOC to the grindfest of EQ. People played DAOC because they were tired of EQ and it's "Raid all day, Raid all night" gameplay. Also if you are expecting a EQ1 clone with Vangaurd you are going to get a rude awakening as the dev's already stated in their FAQ that Vangaurd wont be a EQ1 clone.
As for WoW....been there, done that, raided till my eyes bleed. Right now am passing the time with EQ2 untill Warhammer Online rolls.
My general take on WoW is this: The game is an absolute blast 1-59. Constantly finding new lands to explore, cool quests to go on, and new instances to explore and conquer. It's twice as good if you do it with friends. Once you hit 60 it goes on a steady downhill fall. ZG, MC, BWL and the AQ's are fun the first few times, but once you learn the encounters and strats they are mind-numbingly boring. Thus begins the gear grindfest so you can get gear to do the next gear grindfest dungeon so you can do the next gear grindfest dungeon so you can do the next gear grindfest dungeon so you can do the next gear grindfest dungeon, et cetra et cetra.
The only real reward out of it all is being able to zerg level 56 warriors wearing blues in AV. But even that get's boring after a while, and all real PvP competition is lost to huge class and itemization imbalances. Whoever's guild has progessed the furthest endgame wins PvP. Sure skill plays a role, but gear is so ridiculously powerful/is exponentially better with each dungeon at high levels that the importance of gear drastically outweighs the importance of skill. A retard playing with a 60 warlock in good gear could own anyone. SKILLCOIL AMIRITE? Those that choose to PvP and don't want to raid really have no options gear-wise to compete. Rank 14 you say? Sure! If you want to grind CP for 16 hours a day for 3 months straight...
So, I did like a lot of people end up doing. Twinking. Generally only 19 and 29 are fully twinked BG's. Gear is limited and (for the most part) easily acquirable with a level 60 to run you through low-level instances. Yes, some gear is better/harder to get than other gear, but it isn't entirely game-breaking or making. Enchants do play a slight roll (my 19 twink warrior has 1500 HP, WTF AMIRITE?), but most everyone that is twinking a character has those enchants available to him/her. The competition is insane (twink guilds vs twink guilds) and it's fairly enjoyable.
But hey, whatever you like goes, enjoy the game however you can.

BTW, I played WOW for like 2 maybe 3 weeks at most. Never really got hooked (except for the first 48 hours).

GamerGuyX - You will have to give Vanguard : Saga of Heros a try when it comes out. But some people might not like it. It's values and "Vision" (tm) are for the HARDCORE gamer. The graphics are sweet and I'm SURE ;) the game play is awesome. And that is all I will say about that. BTW, they are currently in Beta 3 and it should release Winter 06/07 (Ie. November - Feb)...
