Some time ago I made a thread for one of my absolute favorite games, Deus Ex. Now the time has come to bring up Freespace 2.

I played and loved the original Decent Freespace back in '98 and regrettably I never bought the sequal mostly because I was a poor, poor little kid back then, whose money did not grow on trees. I got the demo off a disc from a magazine and I played it through at least 10 times. I was a little confused but also dazzled over the new interface, effects, models, the whole new graphic impression. Still, I was not totally convinced that it was a "must have title", but seeing some reviews off gamerankings today I kick myself for not pawning my dog in order to afford it :(

Does any of you have any positive experiences with this game? :)
Is it even available anymore? =/

I'm sure if you look hard enough, someone may be seling a game..

If your interested in a space flight sim game... you might want to conser X3 Reunion.. As you can tell, there's a bunch of us hooked onto it.. Its got its ups and downs, but overall a good game. It can get, fustrating in the beginning when you first start out.. it takes money to make money.. so after you make your first million or two, it gets easier..

Freespace 2, I still think about it often?

I remember how giddy I was when I first saw the Colossus. Remember that sequence?

Man, what happened to that franchise?

Man, what happened to that franchise?

It went busted with interplay since they hold the licence not volition :(

In my opinion, it still is the best space sim out.

There are a few projects going on to enhance the game after volition release the source code back in 2002, try them as well if you got a hand of the game, like from underdog or from ebay (I just did a quick search on it, and there are still some copies avaliable around europe).

Reminds me of how giddy and absolutely awestruck I was when the GTD Galatea die in the hands of Lucifer.. I was on the verge of sobbing like an old lady :(

Anyway I kinda found this site: http://www.freespacezone.com
'Nuff said right? :)

Don't worry I will still buy it at some point I'm sure..

Yuet what kind of mods is it? Anything that enchances the graphics? I don't really want the game content changed in any way other than if it's graphical/technical opgrades or that sorta thing

Freelancer was also very good, Digital Anvil did a great job with that.

The ultimate was Privateer 2 the darkening - that game was space sim perfection for me, and who can argue with Christopher Walken!!!

You can try The Freespace Source Project (http://scp.indiegames.us/news.php). It's a modification of the engine which gives you tons of extra graphical features, and there are optional texture and model packs which simply enhance the look of the ships while retaining the original atmosphere. It's great, and I highly recommend it.

Yea, graphical/technical upgrade to the original game not mod, my bad, I should have said it more specifically. :o

Still under development, but this standalone Freespace:Source mod is definately something to look forward to for all the BSG fans out there.

Notice though the site has been revamped recently and doesn't seem to work very well ATM, so no screenshots and vids, but I can tell you they looked astonishing when I last viewed them.

Yuet and Nightfire, you are talking about the same thing right? I actually had made up my mind to finish the game with comepletely unedited content first, but it sounds like it's worth a try.. I guess my experiences with the System Shock 2 texture/model/whatever mod where the zombie's visual expression was ruined totally IMO, so it kinda turned me off on any FS2 mods also.

Anyway I'm a little bit confused here. Which category am I supposed to browse on the download site here?

I just want the graphical improvements mind you :)

PS: I must admit that their achievements sound quite remarkable. Read this one-page article from PC Gamer, among other things stating that the mod enables FS2 "to stand proudly next to modern games like X3: Reunion" (nana2)

Yeah, I think we're talking about the same thing. Should've caught that. ;)

You'll probably want the Recent Offical Releases. I believe that's only the engine modifications.

Bah, I can't figure it out.. I'll just play the game completely original :o

Anyway I think it's still great - the graphics are still nice enough, sound is very satisfying IMO, atmosphere/fictional universe/storyline top notch - highly recommendable for anyone still having it on the shelf

frespace 2 sucked, it was so linear, and i watched my dad clock it in 2 weeks.

if you want the best space game ever created, besides elite, the game you want is Independence War 2: The Edge of Chaos ;)

I couldn't care less about linearity in games as long as they have a strong storyline with lots and twists and turns as the resulting unpredictability makes it feel a lot less enforced and much more immersive. It's pretty clear that you haven't played it yourself and besides, if less linearity in spacesims meant better games, Freelancer would be a godgame.
As of right now, Independence War 2 appears to have an average reviewscore of 82% while Freelancer has 85% while Freespace 2 has 91% (gamerankings), which just shows that it's not the case. It's not a definitive quality scale, see it more as an indication that your opinion might be rushed or biased. But I guess there are only extremes. Either games pwn og suck.

I think it's incredible that Freespace 2, now 7 years after it's release, still has an active community and it's my impression that most people believe that it is the best spacesim of all time :)

Holy ****.

I found a copy for OSX (they even have universal binaries as well).

I played through it all again, except this time with glowmaps, spec maps, and shinemaps...and the super high rez redone backgrounds...this looks seriously like the cinematics as far as visual quality and it manages to push the graphics pretty hard. This sucker will use up a 128MB card no sweat with all the options turned on.

Wow, just...WOW. If you guys haven't checked out the 3.6.7 or the 3.6.8 mediaVP updates you are REALLY missing out. I was in awe when the Psamtik first showed up. The engine trails are high res textured glow effects. If Doom3 were a space shooter it'd look like this...simply incredible.

Btw, the Psamtik looks better than this up close. If you try this out, just two words...engine glow.

Very amazing what they've done.

Incoming @ 1200k/s :D I'm hyped. When I moved out to college I left my Freespace 2 discs back home, and they were misplaced in a springclean of my room :thumbdwn:

Now THAT is very nice, I would love to get my hands on a DVD image as oppose to the bunch of CD's.
