They updated the software for the ATI HDTV Wonder recently so I gave it a shot hoping it would fix the disappearing mouse pointer issue, having to answer the DMA question every time issue and the remote wonder software crashing at random times issue. The having to answer the DMA question every time issue seems to be fixed but the mouse cursor and remote wonder crashing problems still remain. One nice new thing is that they've now integrated the tuner so it handles analog and digital channels so there's not a separate app for each one. The bad is that MMC 9.13 seems really unstable. I'm now frequently having the tuner lockup on me when changing channels or when moving the channels up and down in the channel list (trying to get the channels in the order I like them to be in).

So, is anyone here having better luck with the MMC 9.13 software? If so, I might keep trying to work through the issues. I'd really like to stick with it since having to answer the DMA question every time was annoying and made using the remote a big pain.

I haven't tried it yet. Not sure if I will after your verdict but then again, I have a regular AIW, not the hdtv :)

Might give it a go this coming weekend. I got a promotion so I'm swamped at the moment doing a ton of paperwork/projects/charts before I move :D

Congrats on the promotion.

I wouldn't go by my results. I seem to be a worst-case example. I just figured if it wasn't working very well for others, there's no way I'm going to be able to get it stable. If it does work well for others, then I'll keep chugging along trying to figure out my issues.

I've had to go back to the old version. When I had the X1800XT in the system, I was just getting occasional MMC crashes but with the X1900XTX in the system, MMC crashes every time I exit the TV player app. I guess the beta drivers for the XTX aren't completely compatible or something.

Well, I have it installed and working.

I love the fact they actually added new features

It's also extremely stable for me, I have been running it since last night and no hangs. Recording is pretty much the same but I like the new features it introduces.

Must be hdtv tuner related I guess.

I think I'm installing it correctly but just to make sure, can you list the order you install the various pieces and also if you reboot when prompted? I follow the order from the download page and reboot when prompted. I also normally install the graphics card drivers as well as the MMC software since I usually use the ATI uinstall app and it removes everything.

Heh, this problem has been driving me a crazy for a while but I figured it must just be my system. While reading the AIW X1900 review at the Tech Report though, I found that they've been having the same issue. The remote control software just crashes at random. Mine is mostly random but I can frequently get it to crash by just starting to defrag the HD.

Picture quality was aweful on my TV Wonder Pro. I mean REALY bad. It looked like it was coverting to 240i and line doubling. It also crashed like crazy.

Back to DScaler.

At least your remote works.

I can't even use my remote anymore :(

And I can't rollback to older remote drivers either since they don't work with 9.13.

Gotta love the crappola (nana2)

Wow, yeah, I'd be a little disappointed if I couldn't use it. While it crashes sometimes and that's annoying, I still really like the remote when it's working. I have both of my computers connected to a switch so I use the remote to control the 2nd system (a lot of the time) so I don't have to keep switching back and forth. I frequently use it to take screenshots of HDTV programs also.

Mine is a no-go.

I am really annoyed and have submitted my trouble tickets.

I love the fact that the widescreen and other features are much improved from before and I have better functionality and control all around for this baby.

I think I've finally gotten 9.13 to work. I found some old notes from when I had the AIW 9800 Pro and it mentioned that I had better luck when I'd ignore their reboot prompts. So basically, I installed the 6 pieces of software without rebooting when prompted (just rebooted at the end of the process). The MMC now seems to be a lot more stable. Before it was crashing almost every time I exited the TV app.

The other change was that I didn't reinstall the Cat drivers as part of the process. That is, I didn't use the ATI uinstall app and just uninstalled the HDTV Wonder software step by step.

OK a couple noob questions for you. I just acquired one of these (HDTV wonder). My local BB by some miracle happened to have one.

I take it I can d/l a newer version of the software that comes with this thing from ATI's site?

I have DScaler 5 installed for MPEG2 decoding/DVD playback and use it along w/MPC to play back DVD. The ATI software I install along with this - does that effect DScaler or replace it somehow?

Yeah, just make sure you don't grab the regular version of the MMC software. I haven't checked to make sure of that lately but at least for the first several months that I had it, the HDTV Wonder has its own versions. I once tried just updating to the latest MMC not realizing that and it broke a lot of the functionality. With MMC 9.13, they've started merging some of the apps so maybe at some point, it'll all be the same thing. With earlier versions, the digital TV app was separate from the analog TV app. With MMC 9.13, they're combined and that's more convenient although it seems to have broken Gemstar (can't see the TV in the preview window but I didn't really use that anyway).

Edit: Tried a link to the area but it just ends up at the regular area. Just go to the drivers section, XP, TV tuners and then look at the bottom of the listed TV tuners.

I don't know about DScaler, sorry. You might want to ask BrianG. I think he briefly tried the HDTV Wonder and went through some of that.

Oh boy. Looks like I'm about to break all kinds of crap getting this thing working then. I have no idea WTF I'm doing. :(

I'm going here:
https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&folderID=27

Is this the right version?

Also it appears the ATI DVD Player comes with this thing... I wonder if I really need that and if I couldn't just keep DScaler on there.

Your link did what mine did and just took me to the Support page. Check my edit.

Actually, just go to Drivers/XP/TV Tuners and then look at the bottom. You should see the HDTV Wonder at the bottom. You should have 5 pieces to download and install plus the remote wonder software.

See attachment.

Thanks I think I found the right page. Just two more questions then.

Which type of remote software do I need from this page:
https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&folderID=303

And also is the ATI DVD decoder a necessity? Or is that a BrianG question? :)

Thanks for the help man.

Yeah, it's a someone else question. I always install it and from what I've read it's supposed to be pretty good. You'll have to have the CD in the drive to install it though since it goes through a verification process.

I actually don't think the remote wonder software matters. I think it's the same. That is, I've downloaded all the versions and they were all the same. file. Or rather, the ones I could find.

Yeah, and then I go back and quickly edit b/c I was typing too fast. :)

Have you actually got it up and running yet? If so, how many stations do you get?

Riptide
02-03-06, 10:07 PM
Well I'm waiting until tomorrow... I have a buddy coming over and we're going to put a VF700 in place of this POS fata1ty cooler that I have on there now. The one that upsets me with it's stupid fan noise.

I figure I'll just mess around with it then. In time for the superbowl the day after tomorrow. lol

I should get at least 3-4. It's not many stations, no, but this is a cheap toy so WTF eh?

BTW I don't see why I would need the ATI decoder on there when all I'm doing is viewing OTA footage. The encoder OTOH would be necessary for captures I think. So I might goof with it. DScaler is actually quite good not to mention totally free. :)

OWA
02-03-06, 10:13 PM
Yeah, I don't think you'd need it. I'm just not sure.

Edit: Actually, if you can find BrianG's post, he may have mentioned all that is his post. I'll see if I can find it.

Riptide
02-03-06, 10:15 PM
Well I'm gonna leave it off of there at first. If it blows something up I guess I can always remove DScaler and put the ATI decoder on there instead.

Hey does that ATI MMC download include drivers for the card itself?

OWA

I found it: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=57367&highlight=HDTV

Just be warned, he wasn't happy with it.

Yes, it has the drivers as well. It's part 2.
