would it matter if i had a EVGA 7800gtx and a BFG 7800gtx running in sli? or do they both need to be from the same company?

As far as I know that should work. I'm looking to do the same thing with a Sparkle GT abd a GT of another brand.

With the new ForceWare Release 80 drivers from Nvidia will allow Mixed vendor support for NVIDIA SLI.

The 81.95, 81.98, and 82.12 drivers worked. Your timings will be recognised as that of the card with the lowest timings. I have a 6800 GS reference card and a XFX card. Fortunately, I was able to overclock the reference card's timings to that of the XFX plus a little more.

so the lowest card is always the boss? well that sucks! becuz a OC BFG will beat out my EVGA @ 497 and 1.3

yeah, i had an evga 7800gt and an xfx 7800gt. worked like a champ. you could overlock them together and it should, if i remember, force both to the faster speed

Yes, just like mixing system ram the slowest will dictate the max speeds.
