View Full Version : VIP mod add-on for Counter Strike: Source

This press release was just made:

After 8 months of testing and updates the VIP Mod for Counter-Strike is getting ready for release! VIP Mod is set to be released the week of Feb 15th and will feature 9 new maps and full Assasination Style gameplay mode for Counter-Strike: Source.

What Is VIP Mod?

Old school Counter-Strike players will remember a gameplay mode called "assasination mode" that randomly changed a member of the CT team into a VIP. The VIP player was only allowed the pistol he spawned with as his weapon. But, he also spawned with 200 armor. The misson in this game play style was simple: "Protect The VIP Team!". The CT's were to escort the VIP to a rescue zone to win the round. The terrorists objective was to kill the VIP. If they did, the round ended no matter how many other CT's were alive.

This game play mode, maybe more so than any other, demanded team play and co-operation. It was exciting to play and was a dream for those of you in to tactics and stategies. Unfortunately this game play mode died when Counter-Strike: Source was released. Valve Software didn't include it in the "Direct Port" of Counter-Strike to Counter-Strike: Source.

In the summer of 2005, game programmer L.Duke started working on this add-on that would re-introduce the assasination mode game play style back into the game. The result is VIP Mod. The only pre-requisite to running this mod on your CS: Source Server is that you have MetaMod: Source installed.

VIP Mod will be released to the public sometime between the 12th and 18th of February 2006.

We will be releasing the Client package via the Vapour Content Delivery System and we will have the server package available for download in a zip file off of the PAF Files Site as well as mirrors such as File Planet and File Front. Fully functioning Windows and Linux versions will be available at the time of release.

VIP Mod received full support from Valve Software and Turtle Rock Studios in the development of this mod for Counter-Strike: Source. In the fall of 2005, employees of Turtle Rock Studios helped in the beta testing process with the mod. Due to the success of the beta tests, Turtle Rock Studios offered to help the VIP Mod Development Team by adding code to the Source Game Engine specifically for use in VIP Mod. In the December 1st 2005 Steam Update news it was reported that they "Exposed VIP player index to plugins/mods". This code helped integrate the independently developed mod with the Source Game Engine flawlessly. The result is a third, independent gameplay mode for Counter-Strike: Source and a full set of high quality maps developed specifically for the release of VIP Mod.

Sounds good, some of the maps don't look too crash hot. Why do they have 2 oilrig maps? I'll be checking it out though.

Would be cool to see, the VIP mode was really quite neat in the original Counter-strike. I was pretty disappointed to see they removed it in Source. I still have fond memories of playing that skyscaper level in VIP mode where the VIP has to be escorted to the roof.

BTW, shouldn't this thread be in the Source subforum?

Yeah, my bad. Hope someone will move it there..

I wonder why they removed it. Was it a time limitation? Wonder if they plan to add it in later?

I liked the TFC version of this with the old man holding the umbrella... :D

They probably just didn't think enough people played it to justify remaking the mode and maps for it in Source. It was a somewhat underplayed game mode, but then again pretty much everything except de_dust and de_dust2 was underplayed. I doubt they ever planned to add it later.

I also really miss the riot shield: love it or hate it, it's hard to deny that it was the only decent counter to the AWP on most of the maps. That they probably just removed because it could be abused (not to mention it was a bit buggy).

Haha, yeah, the old Assassin mode or whatever it was called was fun. The only problem was that since the assassins had unlimited respawns, the game turned from a strategic escort game to a "try to hold off the continual rush of assassins until the VIP dies". If they could tweak the respawn system a bit, that would've been an extremely fun game mode.

I remember there were other modes as well, like es_ maps where the terrorists had to escape before the CTs kill them.

I believe all modes other then AS, CS and DE were user created and not included by default.

Well it's released:

Apparently to install the client you need Vapour and to install Vapour you need an account, and to run Vapour you need .NET. Downloading off the sever might be quicker and easier :/

No, it was definitely official. I used to be an avid CS fan back in the old beta days and I remember that stuff pretty well. It was added in the same release that AS was added in. See the beta 6 changelog:

Anyone try this out yet? Or have a link to a direct download? Would be cool if they managed to pull it off decently. Oh, and how do you get servers with the mod to show up? Will the as_ maps automatically be listed with all the regular maps?
