Oh yes, it's coming alright (nana2)

BioShock is "billed as a "spiritual sequel" to System Shock 2 (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6142322.html)".

http://www.gameinformer.com/NR/rdonlyres/1E4CD6DB-3189-4744-9CB8-E1C875EF374E/8560/april.jpg

Some details from the magazine article:

- Core gameplay centered on player choice and customization
- Game takes place in the early 60s
- Developer's main goal is total immersion in the story
- You wake up in the ocean surrounded by debris and your first goal is survival
- Something about creatures in the ocean discovered by scientists
- "We're creating a world for to be in. What you do is up to you, and you have to live with your choices."
- One of your skills is agility and it makes you run faster
- Most upgrades will affect weapons
- You can create weapons and items
- You can hack stuff by being an engineer
- A walkthrough is useless - you take the game where you want it to go (Sounds really open ended)
- BioShock holds many mysteries
- Xbox 360 and PC - O N L Y

Now if someone would be so kind and post the scans... :bounce:

EDIT: Here they are. All the screenshots are from the Xbox 360 version that will be out slightly before the PC version.

It sounds very unique. I have never played System Shock 2 but have heard great things about it so I will be looking out for this.

Good, I've been hoping to hear more about this game. It's been almost a year since it was announced, and it kinda fell off the radar after that. Still doesn't look like we know much about it though, but I'm definately looking forward to it. It has an interesting setting, can't wait to see some screens and information about what the gameplay will be like (although I'm assuming it will feel familiar to System Shock 2 players).

Its not too late...
The game can be found on the-underdogs.org.
Im assuming its ok since underdogs doesnt host all games, for example Alien Breed 2 isnt available, they refer you to contact Team17 for a copy..
So Im under the impression they are legal..
If Im wrong, delete this post.

EDIT
fixed url, thanks Edge.

Technically it's still illegal, but in the "company doesn't care if you download it or not" situation. Basically if they don't make money off the game anymore, they don't bug the-underdogs for hosting it since it doesn't affect them. But I wouldn't even bother with them for System Shock 2, since I think they only seem to have a version of it with the video and speech ripped from it.

BTW, it's ".org", not ".net"

Yeah, best solution would be buying a copy, but I would imagine that would be somewhat hard to find.. perhaps there are places for old games tho, dunno.
Still, its a great game, even by todays standards if you ask me.. anyone who hasnt played it and are into that sort of game should..
There are some texture enhancement packs (with improved models I think, not sure) to take up the aged graphics a notch..

They actually dont put anything on their site that the developers\publishers dont want them to. If anyone had said anything to them, it wouldnt be on their site. I actually remember reading that they asked the developer or publisher about putting in on their site for free since there isnt anyone selling it anymore :o
Not sure if that was a rumor or not though.

Even if SS2 were abandonware, "ABANDONWARE" IS ILLEGAL TO DISTRIBUTE.
Bottom line, end of story.

Copyrights are not considered abandoned even if they are no longer enforced, so the software does not enter the public domain just because they are no longer commercially exploited or widely available.

For the record, Jeff Brown (Executive President, Corporate Communications at EA) says:

"We pride ourselves in aggressively protecting our intellectual property rights, and we frequently pursue those who try to distribute our games without permission."

There are no titles in the Electronic Arts library that they consider to be abandonware.

Official word from Irrational: "No, System Shock 2 is not abandonware, please don't warez it"

Consider this the final word from TTLG on the subject of System Shock 2's status. Unless we hear otherwise directly from EA and Irrational, all instances involving the sharing of SS2 will be considered piracy.

Right from a member of TTLG Team.

For you OWN sake, buying it would be the best option, since you get the videos and stuff, the complete package..
But how do you support "true art" by buying it used on Ebay? that copy is already paid for by someone, your just taking a free ride on it..

Actually, the torrent version (from Home of the Underdogs) has the videos as well. Someone actually re-encoded them all in DIVX5 format so they arent huge. The audio has been re-compressed too. It makes it a little more difficult to get running, but it is all there.

Day-umn! This is now officially the one single game that has me the most excited for the next 1+ year. I was a bit miffed when I first heard that they weren't doing System Shock 3, but the premise for this one sounds FAR better.

I consider something abandonware when the hardware needed to play it fully is no longer available on the market. That would include most dos games, a number of old windows games, and games for consoles that are no longer manufactured or sold, or if the game itself is nearly impossible to find on the market. If it wasn't abandoned, then the producer/manufacturer would still be releasing patches for the game to support newer hardware and/or newer operating systems, and they would be selling more copies.

That would hold no bearing on whether or not the manufacturer cares if you distribute it. The reason why is because they usually will enforce their copyright just because they can, even though the software has in fact been abandoned.

Take for example, EA owns the rights to 1992 Dune 2 since they bought out westwood, but something tells me they really don't care about that title at all, yet would still persue somebody legally if they were caught distributing it.
