View Full Version : Cooling Idea For X1800XT

Recently I got a VF700 and it is not silent, makes some bearing noise that is bothering me. It's not horrible but I can still plainly hear it with the case closed. My previous VF700 (on X850 right now) is not doing this so I know I got a bad unit. I want to try something else.

I would like to get a Panaflo Hydro Bearing 120mm fan and use this bracket here to mount it right next to my X1800XT.

Do you guys think this will move enough air over the Zalman heat sink to keep the card cool enough that I can just leave the Zalman's fan turned off?

Very unlikely, i'm almost 100% positive that it will not provide sufficient cooling for it.

Well that really sucks. Since the 120mm moves so much more air than the little fan on the Zalman VF700 I was kinda hoping it would more than makeup for that additional 1" or so distance away from the heat sink. :(

I just hate the idea of ordering another VF700 when they should've sent me a good one the first time around. Plus there is always a chance the next one will have the same issue or some other slightly odd noise.

I had a couple of those 120mm panaflo's and if your concerned about noise, one 120mm is louder than the VF700.

At least it'll be a steady normal noise and not some high pitched squeak drive you nuts noise.

I'm going to try it anyway just because the bracket is only $16 and a friend of mine has a Panaflo 120mm hydro bearing on hand to test with. Can't hurt to try though I will obviously check idle in 2D before I do anything.

The advantage here is also that I don't have to do anything to the Zalman and can just leave it on there and keep it unplugged while I test.

If it works fine if not then I'm only out $16 plus my time. I wish I could find a standalone copper heat sink that would be a bit more robust than the VF700's - that might work better with an external fan like this.

Guess I'll find out. If it works well I'll post back here - but I've already got skepticism from multiple sources as far as how this is going to work or not.

Well, I'm glad you mentioned that since I was thinking of picking one up at CompUSA this evening. If the VF700 is noisy, I guess that means the new model you mentioned is probably going to be the same or worse?

It's not normal. My old VF700 is perfectly silent with the case closed. You cannot hear it at all. This one makes a very high pitched, though not extremely loud, bearing noise. I can pick it up even with the case closed. It's just not a good unit. They sent me one from the pile in the back they have reserved for me and PaiN. lol

Has anyone tried modding a Thermalright XP heatsink to fit one of these cards? That would just... OWN :)

Since nobody posted this:

According to the company, the new IceQ 3 can have up to 10C degrees advantage over typical Radeon X1900 XTX cooling, an impressive difference.

Looks like AC ATi silencers on some real steroids.Fully directs the hot air outside the case.It looks like its going to own AcceleratorX imo.It would be interesting if they let you purchase the cooler seperately.

Now this is getting ridiculous.Cooler Master just made a brick!

It's not going to work very well.....
I have this setup

and it did next to nothing to cool the core when I ran a VF700...with its fan running

Yeah I'm glad I never bothered with it. Just replaced the fatal1ty, used CCC, and I'm fine now. 690/800

Looks just like the cooler POV showed at CeBIT, pretty similar to 7800GTX512/7900GTX HSF design.

It should work if you place it over the heatsink fins and not on side of them.

Looks pretty sweet.

I'm using a VF900 with my X1900, and the poor zalman cooler is having a hard time cooling the reactor. :( Upping the voltage and OC is impossible. It would melt the cooler in two seconds. :D

If it was directly below the zalman i see no reason it wouldn't work...

LOL really? where you dumping the toxic waste ? :D

I was thinking about using two VF-900s on my 7900s.I hope they can at least cool a couple of "green" environmentally friendly reactors.

Shouldn't be a problem. G71 runs way cooler than the powerhog R580. :o

And in two months the summer is here. Oh boy.. :( Burn baby burn.

for the $30 you can get the accelerox2. it dropped the temp on my wifes 1800xl by 15c. i figure ill get a couple of more degrees once those funky pads 'cure'.
it is very, very quiet to.
