View Full Version : GF7900 spec?
Yeah, it better be well under $400 if its only 256mb. The X1800XT, X1900XT and X1900XTX all have 512Mb of RAM. You can get a x1800XT for under $450 and the performance is pretty damn good.
I reaaallly hope nVidia can pull this one off. They need better performance than the ATI cards while also having competitive prices. If they can manage that with 512Mb of ram on the GT, then they have an easy win.
Yeah it actually makes sense to release a 512mb GT as Ati seem to have all areas of th top end covered. I will only get the x1900 is nvidia cant compete on price.

Why sould we have 512mb? It's ridiculous since there's no need for it and double the memory size comes at a price. All we need are fast mems. 7900GTX performance gain due to memory is not because of 512mb but because of the 1,7ghz clock. Ultra-high resolutions are unplayable in recent games with a single card anyway.

Well no one would force you to buy it would they. Ati has all the top end of the market covered. I am willing to pay an extra premium for a 512mb card which is why I sold my gtx but I am not paying £586 for a 512mb GTX.

Im more worried about texture memory. Though maybe thats not something I should really be concerned with... if more and more games are being released along side console versions, the textures are going to be more compressed\optimized. And with Quake Wars' Mega Texture, I think thatl cut down MASSIVELY on texture memory requirements.
Maybe 512Mb really isnt that necessary right now... especially with 2gb system memory and a 16x PCI-E bus.
Id like to see a direct compairison of recent games with identical cards with varrying memory sizes. Id be curious about the min\avg\max framerates and maybe the overall "feel" of recent games at the highest detail settings with good framerates (so they dont end up killing the comparison by bogging down the game so much that it doesnt make a difference). Are there even any cards that this can be done with? Maybe a downclocked GTX512 vs a normal GTX?
Thoughts, anyone?
EDIT: Ok, heres one:

Hmm... deffinitely has me thinking now. Things are going to get very interesting when these 7900s start showing up, thats for sure :)
Does it support HDCP for blu ray discs?

Man, ANOTHER 256Mb card? God dammit... I want a 512. Ive been using 256MB cards for 3 1\2 years :thumbdwn:
3 1/2 yrs is 2002, what the hell card were you using then with 256mb?

When my ti4400 died, EVGA sent me a crappy FX 5600 256Mb. I sold it and replaced it with a 9600 Pro 128Mb, but I used the FX for a few months. heh, ok, its more like 2 1\2 to 3 years... my bad ;)

I doubt it, you'll most likely see that with the r600/g80 later this year. It kinda sucks that pc users will be forced to upgrade the gpu/monitor to view hi-def content.

What about the people who just bought a +24" Dell screen with 2x GTX 512 (or G71's soon) ? Think it's a great way to force users to piracy. Damn HDCP !

Exactly, only a matter of time before some 12 year old cracks it :)

We have seen the GeForce 7900 GT card already and we can say that the PCB layout is different from the current 7800GT card. The PWM area is slightly different too. The GeForce 7900 GT card comes with 256MB of K4J55323QG-BC14 GDDR3 memories from Samsung which has an effective data rate of 700MHz so a good guess will be 1.2GHz memory clock for the 7900 GT. We will eagerly wait for the launch in March during CeBIT.
So, 1.2 - 1.4 GHz for the 7900GT, perhaps.

I hope there will be a 512MB Version!
I still don't know what to do... upgrade now (1 card) or directly wait for G80 (SLI).

Just wait. I really doubt this card will be faster than a 7800GTX SLI setup. I hope Im wrong, but I really doubt it will be. If I were you, Id save it for G80.

I think that i'll get a 'cheap' (i hope) 79000GT till G80 arrives. I don't want to expend more money when DX10 is around the corner. Think that i only will use this card for some months. And after watching Crysis screenshots ... :)

If I buy now a card, this would be a 7900 GTX. But I'll wait for the reviews anyway.

Why to upgrade? Is your rig too slow or what? :)

No but keep up the flow^^
But it would be a bit better for the 3007 native..

Hmm...are there currently any industry estimates of when DX10 cards will come around?

They won't release the cards until Vista comes out. The ball lies in MS' court.

Isn't the dx10 spec already finalized though? I know SM4 is.
i think the spec itself is ready but the api layers arent.

What is the vista beta using then? I thought the vista kernel wasn't compatible with dx9?

It will be fast, but man that x1900xtx is something. The G71 will be about level, but I get the sense nVidia will push clock speeds a little, which in turn lowers yeilds.

No, NV will make sure the prices are good this time. ;)
