Theres my current list. Im hoping that everything is going to work out, but Ive been reading up on the DFI Lanparty and it seems to have some issues with certain PSU's. So if anyone could lend me a hand who has more knowlege in the AMD area, Id appreciate it.

Currently I have:
Pentium 4 Northwood C - 2.4 @ 3.0 1:1
1GB OCZ PC4000 DDR 3-4-4-8
Abit IC7G 875P mobo
EVGA 6800GT

As you can see Its been a while since I upgraded my motherboard, and now with PCIE coming in I figured now was the time (well, that and the fact my EVGA fan is dying :thumbdwn:). I do however need as many PCI slots as possible as I have a lot of old cards that need it still. I figured Id get an SLI mobo just incase I want to upgrade to it later on (when games start taking better advantage of it).

I havent picked a video card yet, as im waiting to see if Nvidia's newest offering has HDCP support or not. If not Ill probably just nab a 7800 GTX. Also Im not exactly sure on what the requirments are on Vista, I know the Aero glass or whatever requires DX9. If anyone could offer up suggestions or replacments Id be greatful.

I currently have an Audigy 2 ZS and their XFI line really confuses me, is that for professional musicians or what? Its not very clear.

I chose that case because its one of the few I could find that has the "turned" drive bays for Hard Drives. Plus the fact that the PCI cards are at the top make it really easily acessible for me. It seems to have a good airflow as well.

Hey,

You are in the same boat as I am....I have a P4 2.4C Northwood as well but have an Abit IS7 motherboard instead...

Anyways I am looking to upgrade as well but your system is beefier than mine, I have 1GB RAM, but only a 9800 PRO. With your system, why not wait AMD M2?

If not go straight for a socket 939 Athlon X2 system, the one you have there is similar to what I was thinking of getting, except for me I was going to get an Asus Motherboard, and the X2 4400+.

The X-Fi is designed for all crowds, the basic Xtreme Music is for general computer use, hardcore gamers might want to get the Fatality version which has X-Ram memory on board....keep in mind very few games support the X-Fi so I think it would be better to wait for a PCI Express version of the sound card, I have the Audigy 2 right now as well, and I will hang onto it for now.

By the way most new motherboards come with only 2 or 3 PCI slots...I haven't seen any with 4 so be careful when choosing your motherboard, especially if you need PCI slots.

That case DOMINATES!

Good list so far. Two things, that OCZ ram sucks when it comes to overclocking so either try some of the Mushkin redline, Ballistix, or the OCZ stuff that jakUp has (can't remember the name of it right now). Most people will tell you to downgrade to a 4400+ and OC like mad, but I think it's a good choice to get a GUARANTEED 2.4ghz and would even consider the FX-60, but the 4800+ is a good buy right now. The Antec Trupower should be fine with DFI boards but for a high end system like that, you should get a high-end PSU like a PC Power and Cooling or OCZ Powerstream etc. etc.

As for the X-Fi, they're all for gamers/enthusiasts except the Elite Pro which is way too freakin' much for a sound card anyways. The Fata1ity and Elite Pro both have X-Ram which is on-board memory that might be used in future games. The Fata1ity and Platinum both have front bay inputs and remote controls (the Elite Pro has an external boxbut it's not useful unless you're a professional). The XtremeMusic and Platinum are identical, except the XtremeMusic doesn't have a remote or front panel. Choose according to your needs, the panel is useless to me so I just went with an XtremeMusic and love every minute of it.

You won't see a DX10 video card until June/July but you can try and hold your breath lol.

Good luck with your build, post pics when you're done!! :)

With all that high end stuff, I would for sure get a better PSU, this one http://www.pcpowercooling.com/products/viewproduct.php?show=T51ASL has the 8-pin ATX 12V power connector the eXpert requires:)

Thanks much for the replies, all this stuff is currently on the way to my house with an expected delivery date of today :D

mr_oh_so_ice,
I think the X2 is good enough for now, Ive been reading reviews and it seems they all say that encoding a video + playing CSS at the same time is 100% possible with little to no slowdown. I really cant wait to try that!

Yeah, I think im gonna hold off on the sound card, Good to hear they are making PCIE versions. I know the only difference between our cards and the Audigy 4 is 109dB vs 113dB (LOL, hardly worth the upgrade).

3 PCI could suit me well. Im getting a new ISP soon, so I wont be needing my wireless card as I can have my router up in my room now (nana2)

keith33,
Thanks for the positive re-enforcment :) Cant wait to see this case! Cooling has been a major issue when it comes to my previous cases and this one looks to solve it quite well!

Im not too concerned with Overclocking as I think this system will be a super beast :) Plus I wouldnt want to try anything, since this is my first foray into the AMD world :D

Fata1ity, hahaha God, I really hate seeing his name on products. Its just so stupid..Marketing BS :thumbdwn: I think im gonna stick with my Audigy 2 for now, I dont really see much of a difference between that and the Xfi. Like you said, the front bays are useless to me, All I need is the card :)

I think this PSU is adequate. My current system only draws 230 Watt's (thank you APC battery backup software!)

Thanks for the replies, will post pics when I get it here. Ironically, my cousins stuff is arriving here today as well (nana2) So im not sure who's to build first :D

Awesome....I think I will take the upgrade plunge too, but I think I might go straight for the X2 4800+ as well. Post some thoughts on how good of an upgrade it is over the P4 2.4 Northwood.

Wont be for a while yet, I dont have a PCI express Video Card but the speakers are insane. At high volume in Half-Life 2 the pistol shot hits you with a wave of sound. Its absoltley fantastic.

Also thanks for the link Lee, turns out your right I do need a better one. Im gonna be getting that one. Thanks for letting me know!

Case is coming in today due to a screwup by newegg, but I managed to get 15$ back after complaining lol. Got the restocking fee on the PSU im returning waived as well since Its sealed :) So you see, it never hurts to ask!

It was wierd, the fedex dude (a nice black man) revealed he was a gamer after he started bringing packages to my porch. It was totally unexpected..My town doesnt have gamers let alone fedex truck driver gamers! He asked how many I was building (since there was around 6 packages). I told him two heh. My cousins PC is all built, Ill post his specs but they are pretty close to me except he got an FX-57.

Yikes, Double post! But just an update.

I took the plunge since there was talk that noone really knows when the next card is coming out..So I went ahead and ordered a 7800GT. The reason being is, as soon as Nvidia or ATI put out a Direct X 10 card (8 months?) Ill be nabbing it and selling whatever card I have then right away. Its an EVGA, and the reason being I got a free mobo with it (which Ill promptly sell).

I also grabbed that PSU that you reccomended and Im RMA'ing the one I previously ordered since its Amp's are laughable at best. I was about to get charged a restocking fee, however when I told them the PSU is sealed It was A-ok :) Fee waived!

Oh screw it, im not RMA'ing this one too. This system needs to go up NOW. It doesnt REQUIRE the 8 pin, on the add in notes in the box it says a 4 works as well. Since I wont be overlocking NOR running in SLI I dont think itll be an issue. Thanks for the heads up though.

Pfft...the Elite Pro is where sound cards should START. The breakout box is very nice, but I agree...it's more geared towards pros.

The EP also has higher quality DACs than the other cards.

I agree, I've never heard the sound from an Elite Pro to make assumptions but I just can't justify that type of money on a sound card. I'm sure it kicks the crap out of my bargain-basement Xtrememusic but I'm assuming you need exemplary hearing to distinguish it. (F-that, 4 iPods later I'm more deaf than a mule :) )

I really dont, however I will over the course of 2 months I will. Thats why this Newegg 6 months no interest/payments option worked so well for me :)

Ill be adding a 74gb raptor to that tommorow as well for my OS/Games drives. My 600GB raided maxtor's will be mostly temporary space for encoding huge videos ;)

Got all but the Hard Drive in today, all total this is gonna run me $2500. Not too shabby, seems to be about the same price every time I get a major overhaul.

Ill be adding the PCI cards and the other stuff then installing the "barrel" style fan over the PCI area. Pics will come tommorow most likely. Heres a shot of its current state:

System turns on all nice ;) Cables all routed, everything but HD's inside now. Hopefully I can keep my array with the new mobo, but if not I have it all backed up. Had some clearance issues with the PSU but I worked around it. Fedex has my raptor on the way which will serve as my OS and Games drives. All I need it that and Im good to go!

I dont see what the big deal is though, Its not mega top end lol. If it was Id have gotten the new ATI card, along with the highest end X2....Crap..Ok so I DO have the highest end X2..Well thats a surprise... :D
