Boot to the windows XP CD and run the RECOVERY CONSOLE from the setup menu (not to be confused with a repair install of XP). Once it takes you to a command prompt, type in (no quotes) "chkdsk /r" and hit enter......and wait.
This will take a while, the bigger your HDD, the longer it will take. However once it is done, it will take you back to the command prompt. Just type in "exit" (again, no quotes) and hit enter. Your computer will reboot. You can take the CD out, you're done with it.
Windows should load normally.

got that once...1st sign on HDD failure...
Back your stuff up ASAP, and prepare for an RMA if it happens again!

It's either the beginning signs of drive failure or simple NTFS partition table corruption, which can happen if you have some nutty IDE drivers (early XP Via 4-in-1s have that) that don't always write the cache before the power goes off.
Happened to me, did chkdsk /f and life was peachy.
