View Full Version : DirectX test - failure at step 8

A problem emerges with my GeForce4 Ti4600; it turns out that the Direct3D Acceleration in DirectX won't run properly. When testing, I get the msg:

"failure at Step 8 ..... " at best; after a couple of times the system crashes altogether with reference to nv4_disp.dll.

Also, under DirectX v9.0, the AGP Texture Acceleration is greyed out (interestingly, this latter is not the case under DirectX 8.1).

In an internet search I found that someone had the exact same problem with a Geforce3 and DirectX v8.0.

Is this a known issue? And if yes, what can be done

Thx in advance

Have a go at re-installing your latest mobo drivers as well.

Pretty sure I got the latest drivers:

nVidia v41.09

VIA Chipset 4in1 v4.45

DirectX v9.0

I also flashed the Bios etc etc

Via problem. Run over to viaarena. Looks like the infamous infinite loop bug. They've got a number of suggestions over there to solve it.

Thanks for the tip; just looked at the article under http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=64; you could well be right.

So, back to the workbench!

Many people are having trouble with 41.09, most of them are solved by installing 42.01. The 42.01 are currently the best drivers for Direct x9.

Alright, here is the final "verdict"

It's a no-go; nothing I did would solve the problem; even along the lines of the very comprehensive "infinite loop" suggestions published by VIA.

I have thus come to the conclusion that either

the card is "crooked" or

there is a compatibility issue with the MoBo (DFI AZ-30EL)

In any case, I have decided to return the card to the vendor in the hope to get a refund or at least an exchange

Best & thanks to you all!

Well, if you haven't returned it just yet, there is another possibility.

Odd errors like this can sometimes be caused by corrupted files. Try re-downloading and reinstalling DirectX and your video/motherboard drivers.

You are quite right, of course.

But this has all been done here; and more than once!

All the best
