There's one version of Linux [current stable Kernel], the rest are distributions ;)

yeah but the diff distros of linux isnt the same distro with limited functionality.
its not really the same thing.

k, this has kinda gone off topic. what im trying to say is I dont think 8 versions necessary.
I think just 2 or maybe even 3 is enuff.
eg Low-end, medium, high-end.
you dont think 8 versions is a bit over the top?

Actually one can only really count six because the *-N are just without MP - so it seems.
Windows Starter 2007
Windows Vista Home Basic + Windows Vista Home Premium
Windows Vista Business + Windows Vista Enterprise
Windows Vista Ultimate
But they could just have well combined Home Basic and Premium, and Business and Enterprise because most people who buys the Home Basic and the normal business version will in the end regret not buying the upgraded version with the added features. So Microsoft should spare the people their disappointment and just combine these mentioned four.
The ones in bold is IMO the only versions worth considering.

you dont think 8 versions is a bit over the top?i dont think so. being an ex-MS channel partner i can tell you MS didnt just go out and do this without any input. they listen very closly to the partners about what they would like to see and i can tell you this is what the wanted not MS. they have done many surveys asking the partners what they wanted and this is what the channel wants. when we go out and sell MS products we see what our customers want and are asking for then we would go back asking the MS reps if they can make it happen.

The package that limits how many programs can be ran at a time is rediculous. However, its the next logical step for microsofts Licenseing team.
Ill definatly be buying the 'ultimate edition' because it has the windows TV stuff included etc.
However, I predict for the next version of windows you will buy it per hour of use.

Yeah, Bill Gates is working on his retirement fund.
Windows Server 2003, Datacenter x64 Edition
Windows Server 2003, Enterprise x64 Edition
Windows Server 2003, Standard x64 Edition
Windows Small Business Server 2003
Windows XP 64-bit
Windows XP Home Edition
Windows XP Media Center Edition
Windows XP Professional Edition
Windows XP Starter Edition
Windows XP Tablet PC Edition
XP has a few different versions aswell.. from what I understand 2003 is close enough to be called a XP version.. well XP is pretty close to 2000 aswell..
The main thing with Vista is they are selling a unified disc, that installs different versions depending the key used, that way they only have to maintain one Master disc of the OS.

I really want to get more info on what the different versions will bring to the table :)
And I sure as hell hope they give some kind of credit to people upgrading from xp, retail or oem.

I'm not sure if one can count 10 distributions, if you are counting Alpha, Power PC, MIPPs, and x86 versions seperate... Reason being those were pretty much restricted to given hardware platforms, and all except the x86 and the Alpha were dropped from further development around SP4 or so...
Pretty much the way I counted it was Workstation, Server, Enterprise server (latter on), and Terminal Server. OEM, upgrade, or full retail, were eseentially different pricing/liscensing to the same product.
I must say however, that all these different versions to Vista does leave a bit of quandry, and one I can only hope gets further clarified as the products come closer to release. The specific differences one version to the next, hell if I know right now. And that said, as of now, I could hardly advise anyone on what to get...

I haven't checked out the link yet, but I thought I read somewhere that they were doing it so that when you bought, say, the Starter Edition, you could excrementally unlock more and more (by paying for it, obviously) to get the higher up versions.
Basically, there is no difference between the disc that ships in the box of Starter and Ultimate. It's just a key for Ultimate that unlocks everything right away, whereas with starter, you can get up there, too, but have to buy another key to unlock the rest.

Exrement wrt your computer :rofl
Well, it wouldn't be impossible. The real difference between say NT 4 Workstation and NT 4 server, came down to about 3 CD keys, and some extra files which bundled in the extra functionality...
It still leaves the consumer with, now 3 or 4 levels for home users (perhaps 4 if one includes starter). And in each of these, why get one other the other... No doubt more info will come out closer to release, to help people decide which is right for them... Do people buy the more limited version (to save money), or Ultimate (just in case)?
I could see many users walk in their local CompUSA or Best Buy, utterly confused (as many users are wrt their systems), and the sales guy trying to sell the most expensive option "cause that's how we make money". For those of us who they might ask advise from, there's still a big unknown in all of this, until all the specific differences from one version to another are itemized, so people can make comparisons, to provide the user with some semblance of an educated answer, to meet their confusion with...

well said Son Goku
i hate all this version crap because...
windows xp HOME was suppose to be fine for normal users -- but over the years it turned out PRO was the better choice especially for business users on server 2003 networks. (which i now am)
so now with VISTA what sorta similar situations will happen? will i buy one version only to later realize i need to upgrade later on because feature XYZ will be great to have with server 200X?
give us a break microsoft.

Oh, ya know, come to think of it... Ya wanna hear about a lot of Vista versions? Take these 8 different version levels, and then add both win32 and win64 versions to the mix. And wrt win64 versions, Itanium (if there will be a separate Itanium version) still would need a different binary then the win64 x86 version. So, are we talking 12 versions, 16 versions, 20 versions, or 24?
Reason I gave values other then multiples of 8, is because some types like Home Basic could likely see no Itanium version. What home owner, would buy an Itanium processor for their comp?
Oh, and jakUp, if you say you would, you don't count :D We all know, you put more into your comp upgrades then many a home user
I guess I will spring for the Collector's Edition - gonna be cool to have a cloth map of Redmond, Washington and the making of DVD.
