View Full Version : XP Pro 64bit NFR
I just called #9 Software, hoping to clarify exactly what an offer that they have is. The person that I spoke to on the phone, said that it is a full version, but when I asked if it was an OEM, she said no, that it was an NFR, meaning Not For Resale. When I asked exactly what this meant, she couldn't give me an answer. I asked if it was an evaluation copy, like one that I have, which is time limited for 6 months, and has to be reinstalled, she said that it was not. She suggested that I check at Microsoft.com, and said that I could get the information there. But, I looked everywhere that I could think of, and found nothing about this version, or even the OEM. This NFR is about $55.00 cheaper than the OEM that I can buy locally, which would make it appear that there must be a signifcant difference of some kind. Does anyone understand what this is about, or can you give me a link to an exact location with the information?

it's probably an OEM .... if you look at those they have "not for resale" printed on it somewhere.....either that or it's a copy that came with PCs they bought.....i know we had hundred sof those lying around when they upgraded the computers at my uni while i was working there when i was a student
You might be right about it being an OEM, but she specifically said that it wasn't. This is from a software vendor, and has no hardware requirement to buy it, but then I guess even OEM no longer has this requirement either. For what ever it is worth, the picture that they showed on their website was a blue MS logo package, whereas the OEMs that I have seen, come in a plain brown wrapper. I just do not want any surprises after having bought it, because that would be a bit late to do anything about it.
I called MS today, and contrary to what the vendors are saying, the OEM sale still requires a hardware purchase. Apparently, the NFR are supposed to only be sold in bulk to other retailers. The vendors are denying this, and one started quoting some law called "1st sale", which apparently meant that MS couldn't do anything about it. I found another vendor that was even cheaper than the last, called RoyalDiscount, and all that I have to do is to send them a money order for $94 to have it shipped via UPS ground. Unless someone can tell me why I shouldn't buy from this vendor, I'm going to send the money order today.
Something else about the NFR that I think that I understood from the MS rep, was that unlike the OEM, it doesn't require activation, therefore would let me reinstall it at will. At least she emphasised that this would be a requirement with the OEM.
Can anyone shed any additional light on this?
This is the version I have. You probably saw it in the other thread.

Your's appears to be the student version, but with the same kind of licensing. Does it require any activation?

It's been awhile since I installed my copy i've got sat about, but as I recall I don't think it does need activation. That's an OEM.
Less price for a better version, that's what I like. Goodbye OEM.
I finally sent off the payment for this, so I should have it sometime next week. I hope that it is as good as some have said.

Royal Discount has great prices on their stuff. It is true that if you buy OEM you need to get a piece of hardware with it. At Directron they force you to do that when you go through the ordering process for an OEM copy - however you can select a $3.49 keyboard as the minimum. Which is what I did when I bought my copy of XP64.
I have since sold it and gone back to XP32.

I have heard both pro and con for XP64, but I'm curious why you did not like that 64?

the main reasons people go back are...
1. some of their hardware/software isn't supported (hopefully you checked this ahead of time)
2. they don't have the time do mess around with various things to get everything working as smoothly as 32 bit XP
I've been running 64 bit XP since it first went final and did away with my 32 bit install soon after. the only thing I had to wait on was tv tuner drivers. Windows itself is much snappier and I can't say any of my old apps feel slower. Gaming although you won't notice much on the fps side of things, memory mgmt is a lot better meaning you can alt-tab out of games like it's nothing, a definitely plus in my book. I've posted this site numerous times here but in case you haven't found it yet visit planetamd64.com for more info.
j0j081,
Yes, I did check my hardware, but I didn't check my software, because I was under the impression that they would run regardless on the AMD system with the 32 bit drivers. I have plenty of time to mess around with things to get them working, just so long as that is possible.
One thing that just struck me, is that while RoyalDiscount did not say so, I have a hunch that what I ordered is the student version like your's...at least another vendor did have the student version at exactly the same price. Have you found that this version lacks anything?
I was too hasty when checking for 64bit drivers before, because HP says that it will have a driver some time this year for it. I just didn't click enough links to see this. Neither my TV or wireless card have drivers either, but they are not as important to me. Since the processor and mobo are specifically made for 64bit, I assume that they aren't a problem. The soundcard and the modem do have drivers, so all that really leaves is the video card and drives. I am assuming that the optical and harddrive drivers are on the XP CD...I hope. So hopefully, the only item of importance is the printer. Oops! I just remembered my UPS, I check on that now.
Since the USPS tracking service showed that my payment to RoyalDiscount had been delivered at about 10:30 AM last Saturday, I called them the morning to see if it had been shipped. I was advised that they had never received my payment, and that they were closed on the weekends, so there was no one that could have received it. Either RoyalDiscount or the USPS is lying, but I tend to believe RoyalDiscount, because I would doubt that they were open on a Saturday. I sent an email to USPS for clarification, but haven't gotten a reply yet. When you send a priority letter with a confirmation, doesn't it require a signature on the receipt?
Sorry I was sleeping for a few days so I didn't see all your posts until now. The student/work at home version I have is identical to any other version you would find requiring activation. The only difference from what I've heard is it may have limited upgrade options when Vista comes out but I don't think anyone knows at this point, that would be due to licensing not differences in the software itself. From what I can tell by looking at your sig most of your stuff should work fine, not sure about the printer or tv tuner either but there are various beta drivers around that may end up working for you. Some people have been able to use a generic print driver for basic operations. What is the exact model of you tv tuner?
It's just called the Hauppauge Win TV Go Plus...the cheapest one that they put out. I remembered you saying that they had put out a driver for your card, but apparently it's not for mine. I don't suppose that you would know which way to point me for the printer driver...would you?
I will try looking for the print driver later tonight or tomorrow, I was gonna look into this old hp printer I have so will do at same time.
I got a reply from Hauppauge today, and apparently your model of their card is the only one that currently has a 64 bit driver. He did say that there was planning for the USB and the 250/350 for later, but none for mine. He did give me a link to download K!TV, which he said that some people have found to work though.

Starforce games won't work, unless there has been a patch released lately that fixes this.

X3 at least will work now in XP64.
Besides drivers, exactly what software has to be 64 bit to work? I overheard a Best Buy salesman telling another customer that an antivirus had to be designed for 64 bit to work. If this is true, I do not recall seeing any that specifically said that they were 64 bit. I also found that there is a 64 bit version of Asus Probe, and this along with some of the other comments leaves me wondering just how many 32 bit apps will actually work?
It finally arrived, and as I suspected it is the same version that jOjO81 has. I'm still in the process of downloading drivers, etc., so when I get all of the ducks in a row, I'll see how it goes.

I think anti virus is practically the only thing that will not work unless designed specifically for X64. Well that and drivers anyhow.
You'll run into the idiosyncracies as you go alone but almost everything can be made to work with just a few exceptions (the above is one). I think even StarForce works now in most games, though I'm not sure about Silent Hunter 3.
I've been trying to download the 64bit version of the VIA 4n1 chipset drivers from MSI, but apparently they are having a server problem. Either it won't connect at all, or it connects with an extremely low download rate. This has me wondering, are the VIA drivers generic, so that if I used the ones available at Asus, would they work the same, or are they tailored to the motherboard? Both my Asus and MSI motherboards use the exact same chipset.
Is there such a thing as a 64 bit antivirus...preferably free?
