I disabled the Paging file on this Windows 2000 machine. I got much faster performance, but pop-up messages came with it. It tells me to increase the Paging file on each startup. Anyone know how to make Windows shutup? (I disabled the Paging file on my WinXP machine, and get no messages)

It is a VERY BAD idea to shut up page file completely. Some programs and/or games might need it even a small portion.

I've done it on my main machine for about a year, and I want to keep it off on the 2000 machine. Performance sucked with the paging file enabled. Games loaded slow, and the HDD was working in overtime.

Of course the HD works harder w/ Page File, it's essentially acting as RAM. Very very bad idea to disable, as you will get major memory shortage problems while running any memory-hungry app, especially on the already resource-hungry 2k & XP OSes.

If I had 4gb of ram I MIGHT consider turning off the page file...
I recently installed Norton SystemWorks and for WinME it created a large pagin file, totalling 360MB. I haven't really noticed a difference.. Is this a good idea to keep a paging file that size or should I do something about it?
Thanks.

How much ram do you have?
P4 1.7 Ghz
768MB of RAM PC-800
2 Maxtor 60 GB HD's

I've experimented with no paging file on my rig for months. 768mb of ram and no paging file gave me no problems what so ever.

if you do a lot on your system, then keep it on there. if you just game, you shouldn't have a problem. Seriously. you can go w/o it ..but it's like doing trapeze w/o a safety net. But you'll find that the virtual memory is still there.. but it's paging your exe's and your dlls. .. you'll notice that your page file is barely being touched if you have a decently sized page file. and you should really get in touch w/ a guy who goes by the name jeh in 2cpu or driverguru in arstechnica.. he knows his stuff as far as virtual memory and the NT family is concerned.
