View Full Version : Problem with AGP Slot and Graphic Cards

I only have an AGP 4x slot in my motherboard. I was wondering, do AGP 8x cards work on this slot? I was thinking of the GeForce FX 5700... But it is 8x... And the other card I have seen 4x is the MX-440 SE which I can't seem to find in any online shop.

Do AGP 8x cards run on AGP 4x slots?

Most AGP 8x cards will work in 4x slots, but they will only run at 4x speeds. What motherboard do you have (chipset, brand name, model)?

Chipset: VIA P4M266A / VT8235
Brand Name: BIOSTAR
Model: U8668 GRAND

Here's the manufacturer page for my motherboard:

he means that 8x cards are backwards compatible with 4x. so, they will run in a 4x slot, however they will only operate at 4x speeds. if you want them to operate at their full 8x speeds, you need to get a new mobo that supports 8x agp.

were assuming that you understand what the 4x and 8x represent, if you dont, check out this: AGP Definitions (http://www.interfacebus.com/Design_Connector_AGP.html)

enjoy :)

It's true the card will only run in 4X mode but at most you'll only use a few fps. I've tried running my 6800gt in 4X mode for the fun of it and that was the case in benchmarks.
