Two years ago, many of us were gaming with systems that were using a socket-754 Athlon 64 processor and nForce3 motherboard chipset. I stepped back in time and assembled such a system in order to review EVGA e-GeForce 7800 GS CO Superclock AGP 8X.

I am a bit confused as the review is about the EVGA e-GeForce 7800 GS CO AGP which is clocked at 430/1300MHz. But then when you start about overclocking you said the stock speeds of 460/1350MHz which are those of the EVGA e-GeForce 7800 GS CO SuperClock AGP? So does that mean you have the GS CO SuperClock or the GS CO are review sample? Just a bit confusing...

hmmm weird, why not buy a new pci-e vid card and spend an extra $50 for a pci-e m/b ?

what they should be adressing is people like me who spent $1000aus on agp video cards by releasing a nforce 4 m/b with agp support :P

Clock speeds of the EVGA e-GeForce 7800 GS CO AGP out of the box are a 460MHz core and 1.35GHz memory. I achieved a modest and artifact-free [b]overclock to a 505MHz core and 1.50MHz memory[b]. In the F.E.A.R. and Quake 4 gameplay scenarios, the overclocked speeds provided an increase in the average frame rate of 4% to 7%.

Great review, Mike. :) It looks like an awesome card for those that are still holding on to AGP. I love eVGA…my first 6800 GT was an EVGA and the two I have now are, and as long as they keep putting out the absolutely stellar cards they have been, they’re going to be my vendor of choice. I recommend to everyone I know in the market for a new card to get an eVGA. This review only goes to further my thought that they are the best card manufacturer on the market.

And a side note: it still cracks me up that eVGA calls these cards the CO edition because they have a copper heatsink, right? Except…CO is the chemical symbol for COBALT. Copper is CU. Definitely not a big deal by any means, but funny nonetheless. :D

Thanks but still it lists...
- EVGA e-GeForce 7800 GS CO - 430/1300MHz
- EVGA e-GeForce 7800 GS CO SuperClock - 460/1350MHz
So I guess the review is of the SuperClock version?

Nice review Mike! I really liked the HL2 screenshot comparison for the TAA. Any chance I could get the save point? I'm always looking for good places for comparisons.

Also, do you think there is any chance this could be used in a SFF system with only a 300W PS?

My mistake. It was a review of the Superclock model, which is shown on the orange and blue colored label affixed to the box.

Nothing wrong with that!

I see you have a 6800 GT. Would you consider upgrading to the 7800 GS if it were selling for $250 and you could get a decent price for the 6800 GT?

Agreed, although I would have given it a Grand Slam award had it been selling for around $250.

A game I particularly enjoyed playing was Vampire - The Masquerade. At 1024x768 with 4X AA/8X AF and SS TAA, I was averaging around 35 fps in the beginning level.

Thanks. The minimum frame rate is of more importance to me than the average. I typically limit benchmark results to those that are near a minimum of 30 fps.

Thanks. I'll dig up the save point and send it to you. That particular spot really shows the benefit of TAA.

Yes, I think you could use the 7800 GS in a SFF system with a quality 300W PS. Enermax has never let me down.

But, those are some big "if's." I see the MSRP for the EVGA Superclock is $380, so that's a helluva long ways from $250. By the time it comes down to that level, will I want to sink anymore money into my aging desktop system? I'm not sure. I see 6800GT's are selling on EBay for anywhere from ~$150-$200, right now. How long will they hold their value?

I guess what I'm trying to say is, if newer games were stomping my 6800GT, and I could upgrade to this card for <$75-$100 (at MOST), I would seriously consider it. But then, will my CPU be holding the new card back? It's like opening up Pandora's Box...and then pretty soon you have a new system.

Excellent review Mike! :) Don't forget the other benefits that the 7 series has over the 6! Features like trasparant AA, a great utility for legacy games :)

Thanks for the update Mike... Did you get my email? Cause I had some questions for you personally. Or do you prefer to receive a PM?

Some are stuck on other platforms than socket 939. Socket A or 478 owners would have to get a new CPU as well. Meaning they'd have to get a new graphics card, mobo and CPU, which would set them back a lot. I think the 7800GS is a very good upgrade for people using lower end cards. For people like me who are on overclocked 6800GTs, there's not a whole lot to gain though.

As for the review, I wish the game benchmarks included more cards, like the 6800 Ultra in the 3DMark bench.

i was enthused when i saw that i could go beyond my 6800 gt oc when i ordered the 7800 gs co superclocked card. Gaming was excellent untill i experieced a crash to a black screen and a looping sound. Rma'd the card and recieved a new card that also crashes. Final Fantasy's benchmark helps show the achilles heel of this card. not sure if there are just bad cores or what but using nvtweak to clock the card down to the 7800 gs co speed remedied the problem. But who wants to spend the extra money to downclock the card. Bf2 runs, call of duty runs, Medal of honor allied assualt crashes periodically. Evga Tech support has no answers right now except Rma the card again if your going to buy this card and not go pci express then go for the regular version.
