Part of me is really tempted to put together an SLI 7900GTX system, but the other side is telling me that it would be foolish not to wait until Vista and DX10 to make my next big upgrade. I was under the understanding that DX was going to be coming bundled with Vista, but several users of Rage3d are now saying that it will be Summer of '07 at the earliest before it becomes released to the public. Has anyone else heard anything about DX10 being delayed?

DX10 will drop when Vista comes out I say, simple as that.

I'm going to skip the 7900 Generation and wait for the next.

Yeah, the "OMGZZ... TEH 1800XT PWNS 512MB 7800s IN SLI" crew.

Well, I think in the interm I might go for a single 7800GT card. They are onsale this week for $330 Canadian, and I have a buyer interested in my dually Xeons, Heatpipes, and Motherboard. If I get my asking price, after selling my 6800 GT, it would cost me a little under a hundred bucks to upgrade to a DFI LanParty S939 Board, Opteron 165, and a single 7800GT. This is less than what it would cost me to upgrade to a 7800GS AGP.

Decisions, decisions....

This quote from the inquirer is for you superkyle.
However, we still think that Geforce 7900 GTX if priced aggressively have a chance to be a good seller as people like the Clan of McNvidia. :D

the only problem with waiting for the next and skipping the 7900 is that first generation dx 10 hardware is proabably going to need some tweaking and fixing and might not be that great anyway. probably better off getting something for now and getting 2nd generation dx10 hardware.

That's only my 2 cents, but should I have to buy a new high-end card, I would wait.

Why ? Because the DX10 cards will feature an additional programming stage, the Geometry Shader, which DX9 cards will miss (unless they run the VS+GS stages on the cpu, but the perf. would suffer).

Considering all that should be doable with geometry shaders (in the realm of shadows and physics for instance), I would not want to miss them.

Now, that's viewed from my optimistic point of view that at least some games will actually take advantage of them, and the real-world may differ...

(By the way, to me there's also another good reason to wait: I wouldn't want to pay for a high-end card without HDCP.)

People are getting confused between DX10 and DX10.1

Is that also the same confusion as wgf and wgf2 for procedural modeling?

Considering that Crysis is a DX10 game and should be available near Vista's launch, I think its safe to think that DX10 should be available with Vista launch.

NV40 was the first GPU with SM3.0 and was pretty good. True SM4.0 jump is a greater one, but I'm sure G80 will be an amazing core.

Doesn't Aeroglass require DX10 anyway? That would indicate to me that DX10 has to ship with Vista, and despite my doubts as to whether MS will release it on time I still haven't heard it's been delayed that late.

No - that's not the case. In the currently existing CTPs of Vista, you can run Aero Glass. All it requires is a DX 9.0 compatible card.

R3D news itself is not so bad. The forums is a different story

DX 10 is to be included in Windows Vista... Though Vista might be delayed until summer 07 (OK, no jokes about Microsoft and vaporware a12ctic :rofl as we've all heard of Windows 95); I wouldn't expect this unless something catastrophic were to turn up late in beta testing or something...

From what I've read however, DX 10 will not be back ported to winXP, and Halo 2 will also require DX 10 to run on the PC...

http://www.gamespot.com/news/6143976.html

If PC users are having trouble deciding whether to move over to Windows Vista, Microsoft's next-generation operating system, when it is released later this year, the fact that the fate of the Earth depends on it may tip the scales. Microsoft Game Studios today announced that it is developing Halo 2 for the PC.

The game will be only for Vista, and it's being developed in partnership with the franchise's original developer, Bungie Studios. The PC version will include Halo 2, the bonus maps that came in the Multiplayer Map Pack, and the ability to "build, create, and customize their own multiplayer levels." No release date or other details have been announced.

Last week, questions arose when Bungie revealed it was hiring PC programmers to help "work on the biggest franchises for Microsoft Game Studios." Many presumed that Bungie would be porting Halo 2 to the PC in-house, unlike the PC version of Halo, which was developed by Brothers in Arms creator Gearbox Studios.

Halo 2, now more than a year old, is the best-selling Xbox game of all time. Bungie has not yet announced its next project. For more information on Halo 2, read GameSpot's full review of the Xbox version. For more information on Windows Vista, check out GameSpot's feature on the operating system.

Well typing from Vista right now, and DX10 is here, along with MP11. I would have to say DirectX 10 will ship with vista, just a guess if i can see it right now.

Nah, you're going to upgrade to Vista because it rocks.

I've used build 5308 and 5342....and 5342 kicks ass.
