my main rig died about a week ago and i picked up a couple 7800 gt's from the local compusa to tide me over till the 7900's arrive .

the plan is to return these two puppies ASAP and get either:

a. 2x 7900 gts and overclock the bajeezus out of em.

or

b. 1x 7900 gtx and save up for a second in a few months.

now i know we as yet dont have any solid numbers, but i would love any input/speculation you guys could provide.

I posted this in another thread covering a similar topic:
We'll see when they come out... supposedly the 7900GTXs are hitting 700Mhz on the core now. 7800GTXs were getting about 30% performance increase from SLI in most games from what I read. The 7900GT has almost identical specs, so its safe to say that itl perform about the same. The 7800GTX512 (which is clocked 150Mhz slower than the new 7900GTX) is probably no more than 10% slower than 2 GTX256s in SLI. So if the 7900GTX is now 8-10% faster (well, plus another 50Mhz if they overclock it) then 2 GTs will probably only be a tiny bit faster.

2 7900GTs that slightly outperform a GTX, use twice as much power, have half as much memory and cost $100 more doesnt really seem worth it to me. If they overclock well, thats what will make the difference.

So we wont really know until we see how well the 7900GTs overclock, especially in SLI, but even then, it doesnt seem that great to me. We may not be using 512Mb of video memory just yet, but from the screenshots Ive seen of UT2007, that will be changing very soon. I think a single really fast card with enough memory for next years games will be better than 2 fast cards with enough memory for days games.

man, if these (http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=1121) numbers are true i'll just keep my two 7800 gt's.
