XP Help Needed

I just reinstalled Windows XP a couple weeks ago. All drivers are up-to-date, all unnecessary services are turned off, as are all unnecessary msconfig startup entries. All Windows updates downloaded and installed.

Problem is, Ive tried to install 3-4 apps/games in the past few days, and every time, the install-shield window that pops up first (Windows is now configuring the yadda yadda yadda), runs up to 99% and then stops. Ive tried it from 2 different CD drives, Ive copied the files to the HDD and done it from there, etc. Nothing seems to work except running the install from Safe Mode, which is fine but I shouldnt have to do that.

Does anyone have any idea what the problem is? Id really appreciate any help. Thanks.

1) What programs are you trying to install?

2) How long are you waiting while the InstallShield wizard is at 99%? There are some apps I know of that will hang for up to about 30 seconds at 99% but it will get to 100% and you'd be able to complete installation normally.

Thanks for the quick reply. 2 were games (Medieval Total War, Fighting Steel), other was Illustrator. All legit copies on original CDs.

Yes, Ive waited, and after several minutes, the install window just disappears and installation does not continue. When I try it safe mode, however, it works.

Wierd part is for the first week and a half or so, I installed several games, all drivers, Photoshop, Office, etc., with no problems whatsoever. Could I have turned off a service that would affect installation?

It sounds like the operating system is giving you a problem..

Be careful on what services you turned off..

Also try reinstalling your hardware drivers..

If all else fails I would do a reinstall and try installing your apps without editing XP..

I had a problem where I couldnt burn any data from my Hardrive on to a CD-R..I reinstalled my Asus Motherboard drivers and everything was working properly even though the device manager was saying everything was installed properly..My IDE drivers never took for some reason..
