... What did they remove ?
Just interrested. Any ideas?

They removed over 20 million transistors, thats all. The features are the same, and the whole core is just optimized. They managed to put the pipelines (or whatever exactly) on a diet but without losing performance. I havenīt read all reviews, but it will take a lot benchmarks with even clocked 7800/7900 cards to figure out WHAT exactly was improved and what was inefficient in the first place.

Lower transistor count doesn't necessarily mean there's less functionality; just that there's less "logic" set out in hardware...

agent hit it on the nail here; when a software programmer manages to cut the number lines in their code, it doesn't necessarily mean the software is less functional, as it could be more optomized, now taking fewer instructions (and hopefully fewer CPU cycles) to get the same job done...

Also, if one can get the same task done, with improved efficiency and performance, while getting a lower transistor count, there are some other benefits. All em transistors, switching at whatever the GPU's core clock is, generate heat... Fewer transistors can help generate less heat, if all else is equal ;)
