Hello all, new to the forums :)
I was wondering what you guys think of the x1800xt, is it work upgrading from an x800xt? I will have to upgrade my mobo because the x800 is agp but thats all fine and good if its actually work the upgrade. Any ideas?

The X1900 XT would be a far better choice. The 1800s are pretty much dead in the water right now.

what are the major differences between the x1800 and 1900 series? they came so close together and i dont know all the details, even after reading a few reviews
edit: I checked http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=4709&page=1 , which compares the two....i found a major difference is its shade-processing power, i didnt see this in other reviews, and i see how they are just cutting off the x1800 line even if its only been 4 months!

7900GTX why go with a ati card when theres nvidia?
I wouldn't do it :)
I am STILL waiting for a viable upgrade.
Naturally the multi-media aspect concerns me more but overall I am not that impressed with the speeds at the moment.
If you do upgrade, do what saturn suggested.

Yeah the 1900 is a better value for the $$ even if the 1800 is a bit cheaper now.

I wouldn't tend to make an upgrade of this sort... The card just isn't enough of a jump IMO to be worth it...
Unless of course, you have some other reason to be getting the motherboard. AKA if you were going from a Athlon XP 2000+ or so to an Athlon 64 X2... In that case, making the switch over to PCI-X (with an attendent new card) might be worth while. But without a good reason such as a CPU upgrade, save your pennies, buy a game, whatever...
Besides, next year Vista will be out, and sometime after (albeit can't say exactly when of course) we might start seeing Direct X 10 parts. Combine that with a Conroe upgrade (if it holds up to AMD at the time, like many people are expecting today), or whatever AMD's counter might be (after it comes out); and you should get a nice boost from it all...

Well looks like i wont be upgrading, im just a bit addicted ;) so i guess i'll put it off til sometime nearer or into '07. I already have a athlon 64 3500+ so upgrading the cpu will probably happen around the same time as the video card and mobo. Was just thinking about upgrading because i get an accomadation with ati through my job, but honestly it doesnt save me that much and the fact that its such a small gap in performance as some of you have said its just not worth it at the moment. Thanks for the great info :)
With the x1900XT you will see a performance leap with AA and AF cranked up period, moreso than the x1800 XT even though it will perform btter than your x800. However, this is the situation we face...u always know a better/faster product will be out in 6-8 months time...even less sometimes

Honestly? Because the X1900XT is cheaper and faster. The only reason I'd go with a 7900GTX is because of noise, the X1900XT is noisy at times.

Not if you rip out your ear-drums.
Nah, that was a feature unique to the 5800 Ultra. The X1900 is merely audible at times.

The X1900 series is basically an updated version of the X1800 with:
1) 48 pixel shader processors instead of 16.
2) "Fetch4" hardware shadow mapping with subpixel edge smoothing. A feature similar to Nvidia's Depth Texture HW accelleration.

I'll let you know how my upgrade pans out.... I'm going this exact route in the near future. I already have the video card, but holding out on getting a MB.

I'd go with a X1900 over a x1800(more futureproof). But, if you can find a deal over at newegg.com which includes a "free" motherboard with a 7900GT/X, I think you should go for that. Spending $400 for a Supeclocked 7900GT and a motherboard is not too shabby. :) Or get the eVGA SC on it's own for $340 and a decent motherboard for $60.
