My NEC3500A seems to be having some problems. It will, when closing a session after a burn, make clunking noises and then Nero goes into not responding. It comes out of it after a minute of sitting there clunking away at which point the disc is fine. However event viewer complains about the device having bad blocks.

Is this a sign that my barely year old burner is going bye-bye? :(

Possibly. Have you tried an updated firmware?

Nope. It's in a USB enclosure. Don't you have to put it back on IDE before you can flash?

I think you should just give up computing all together. :p

lol

The drive has actually been pretty good, and still works, just seems like it's maybe starting to have some problems. IME most optical drives if they see heavy use only tend to last about a year or so. My Sony DRU-500 was a total POS. Barely made it a year and it started doing similar things (clunking when closing a session).
