Hi folks,

With mixed reactions being everywhere, are there any people here that have had to install new hard drives, going from SATA150 to SATA300 that have noticed any "real" gain from doing so?

I'm going to be picking up a second drive for storage soon, but tempted to nab a SATA II and use the current one as the storage drive.

Not interested in uber fast raptors or anything like that, way too small.

Any suggestions?

There's no price difference between SATAI and SATA II and if your motherboard supports it, then you might as well get the SATA II drive.

As far as any real world difference in performance, I haven't noticed any since using SATA II drives.

only difference is 300mb/sec over 150mb/sec on the interface, the hardware isnt fast enough to get close to the 150mb/sec limit, so there isnt much to gain really.. but it doesnt hurt either.
SATA300 drives runs on SATA150 interface aswell if need be.

Yeah, my board can take SATA II no problem.

Been allsorts of horrors relating to NCQ and nForce4 boards ala data corruption and stuff. Hmm

Haven't personally experienced any problems with NCQ or data corruption, but then again I use the reliable Intel chipset :p

yeah going from intel chipset to nforce, i really liked the intel better.

back to topic, with SATAII your burst speed will increase, from about 110 to 180-220.

but remmeber that burst is data being transfered from cache, so its either 8 or 16mb

no. you're fastest sustained (meaning it can put out this much data constantly) is the wd raptor 150gb. And that hard drive only gets out 80-90mb/sec. Sata 2 drives have the potential but can't reach it yet.

wheeljack12, you got it wrong, its is worth it, considering the diffrence might be 1-3 dollars.

better to buy 250gb sataII drive then 250gb sataI drive
