View Full Version : Gaming at 1920x1200 - OC'd 7900GT or 7900 GTX?

I am just putting together a new PC build and am having a hard time deciding which video card to go for. I am a big eye candy freak, and would like to be able to game at 1920x1200 w. AA in newer titles such as COD2 and BF2. I have been trying to find some benchmarks comparing an overclocked 7900GT such as the Evga or XFX cards in comparison to a reference 7900GTX to see if the performance difference is worth the extra $250 bucks but have had no luck. I have seen some benchmarks that seem to indicate that the extra memory on the GTX helps when using higher resolutions, especially when using AA. Am I correct in assuming if this is the case that no amount of overclocking would bring the same sort of performance from a 7900GT with its 256 megs of video mem?

Is anyone else gaming on a Dell2405 or similar model display at this resolution, and if so, what sort of card are you using to get smooth frame rates?

Thanks in advance..

The faster the better if you plan to use 1920x1200.

$250 is steep but you are needing the speed. I just ran the in-game performance test in FEAR. Settings were 1920/1440, 4xAA/16AF and got 30FPS. CoD2 or BF should do a little better but I don't know how much.

Although I do not play COD2 or BF2 - I run all of my games at 1920 x 1200 with 7900GTX - everything is butter at 4X or 8xS AA and 16X AF....including Far Cry and NASCAR 2003 and NFS MW and GTR.

I opt'd to get 7900GT SLi instead of a 7900GTX with possibly a second one later.

Even at higher resolutions the 7900GT Sli shoudl be faster than the GTX

I can't do SLi becnharmks because one card arrived defective and now it's a long waiting game :(

Thanks for the replies guys.

Labshark: This is using SLi, however, not a single 7900GTX, correct?

Those games he listed can be run at those settings with a 7800gtx 256 (non sli)

A 7900GTX cannot run quake4 etc @ 4xAA 16xAF @ 1920x1200

I just got a large amount of money and i am debating if i should get an other 7800GTX card but not sure if it is woth it really. All games play smooth at 1680x1050 w/4FSAA & 16x AF except Battlefield 2 which is smooth but after 4 or so hours the thing crawls at single digital rates, did the same with my X800XL so looks like a memory leak bug is still in the game

SLI is awesome for higher resolutions, even on my "aging" 7800GTs I get some pretty darn good performance off of 1600 by 1200 and above.

You would definately like the boost if you did.

Personally, I wouldn't invest in SLI 7900 series cards unless you seriously do have money to burn on the grounds that DX10 aint that far off.
