View Full Version : Facegen a poor choice?

While I'm waiting for my Oblivion copy to arrive, I've decided to try the facegen utility which has been integrated into Oblivion.

A while back, I had a talk with a professionist and he rated Facegen as a poor choice for modelling human faces as being too simple, too cozy and making faces all too similar and not well adjusted to various racial features. Now I can understand why.

I contacted this guy again and I had a chance to try the full blown version of Facegen, first by trying to do a face myself from scratch, then using three photos (front and sides) for my planned avatar in Oblivion.

The most disturbing thing I noticed right from the beginning is that adjusting one slider will cause other to move. Some people on the official ES forums lamented this as well and also the lack of a "undo feature" or an option to "freeze" the design in case something goes wrong.

Aside from the fact that the faces look all to similar (particulary in the nose sellion area) and while it's quite easy to implement your avarage type of handsome man, all the females either look too masculine or too rounded. It seems that the designers never bothered to study human phisiology and its difference between races.

After I gave up trying with the sliders, I tried the route of using three photos. I had quite a few selection to start from and I picked up the best from each angle. The process is quite straightforward but the results are really disappointing. Again, trying to obtain a face which does not conform to the basic outlines implemented into the program is an uphill battle.

The final result did not look like the photos, and the profile is totally different from the original traits. In short, Facegen made its usual default face type with some minor adjustments.

While I plause Bethesda for having trying something different, the results are not up to the time spent and the difficulties involved. With over 50 sliders and a "random feature" that produces questionable results the entire process is so frustrating that makes me want to skip it and pick up among a general choice of pre-made faces. The time spent on it is not worth. Also, with the sliders moving together, it's very difficult to replicate the exact results in two differnt characters or even to backtrace the process. At least the standalone facegen has an "undo" feature.

i agree, i was trying very hard to make a specific look for my characters face and it still ended up looking the bloody same as the default

You can actually put/model your own face into the game.

Didnīt Tiger Woods 2006 use Facegen as well? I like it there, not saying it was perfect but at least women looked like women when the modifications were done carefully.

I like the look of the faces in the game. If I had any complaint at all it would be that the character creation gave me TOOO many choices.

BTW, why are you mad that when you move one slider, others move at the same time? Trust me that is for YOUR benefit. If they didn't do that it would be very hard to make a person look right.

yah i have to say that some of the faces in the game are stunningly realistic and others are haha hilariously poor. but i guess the random generation process they used will do that. nothing beats having a sexy voice attached to a wrinkly old grandma, haha.

Also, it is more difficult to backtrace some changes if you are not satisfied with them.

I think the problem is more along the lines of there is just SOOO many options rather than something being wrong with the software. ;)

Yeah, I have to agree here. An "undo" button is deffinitely needed.

Luckily, I made an argonian, so I didnt have to spend 4 hours making the perfect looking character. Im a freakin lizard, I changed my color, messed with the overall shape a bit, added some spines, and thats enough for me :p

I made my guy look like how I do in real life. I think I did pretty good if I do say so myself. However, I'm sure it would have been alot easier if I started out with a Human rather than a freaking woodelf. :p

bahahaha... tyger looks like a puny little elf. :D

Well, at least you didnt make an Orc that looks just like you. Thatd be worthy of one of these:

This is what I came up with facen. I used the pic on the right as well as a profile shot. But even after messing with the sliders for about half an hour I couldn't get the face I wanted

Tomorrow I'll see what I can do within the game but the pics I've seen around the net don't look encouraging at all

Play as an Argonian, Orc, or Kahji then it really doesn't matter ;)

Naa... Nord all the way for me... Although I'm tempted to build a Dark elf with pink skin. :D I've heard that with the color slider is possible to assign arbitrary colors to the skin of each race.

Tomorrow morning I'm going to camp in front of the videogames shop before going to work.

A good thing that my boss is waiting for this game as much as me. Tomorrow I predict we'll have a very long closed doors meeting in his office.
