Is it true that the ATI cards can do both HDR and AA at the same time?

If so, what is the technical reason that nVidia cards cannot?

I love the HDR mode in Oblivion. But I also don't like the jagged edges, even at the 1280x1024 resolution I'm able to play at with good frame rates.

Thanks.

ATI have the ability to do FP HDR +AA, however, it needs to be specially programmed, and Oblivion does not take advantage of this.

So, no, neither ATI or nV will work with HDR+AA.

Check this out. Improved Bloom (looks just like HDR) and AA at the same time. Its not dynamic, but it looks great:

Since I was actually using the search feature (and for other people who similarly stumble upon this post) it should be noted that ATI now support AA + HDR simultaneously.

Come on nVidia, what's happening!?

ATI currently supports AA + HDR with an unsupported patch. If you have any problems with crashing or visual anomilies (and many are) then you are on your own. They are working on officially adding this to their drivers and rest assured they will get it in there, but probably after everyone has finished Oblivion.

Personally I don't think its a big deal. Bloom looks just as good and without the annoying blinding moments you get with HDR.

Nvidia doesn't want to make some half assed atemp, like ATI did. The ATI mod has a chance of breaking the game by causing crashes and graphical problems. Nvidia stated that they will add HDR+AA when it is actually needed, right now very few titles are even using HDR so why bother? They focused on making a better card...

As for HDR in Oblivion, I like it and the lack of AA does not bother me when playing it at 1600x1200. I tired Bloom+AA and while it looked good it didn't perform as well and alot of the time the lighting looked weaker.
