View Full Version : BFG 7800GTX OC to MSI X1800 XL worth it?

After countless posts about people raving about ATi's HQ AF and IQ comparisons is it worth it for me to move from a BFG 7800GTX OC 256 MB to an MSI X1800 XL 256 MB? I seriously do not know if I should do it or not, but its been quite a while since I stuck with a card for too long and the ONLY choice I have available for me is to sell off my 7800GTX and move to an MSI X1800 XL. This is a question for users who have been using both cards and can tell me the following:

Is the IQ worth it compared to compromising of speed. My 7800GTX is pretty much a 7900GT (stock) in benches and an X1800 XL would mean that I may have to turn down resolutions in some games to 1280*960 or 1280*1024. I am willing to do that *if and only if* the IQ is excellent on the ATi card. That is to say there is no AF line moving in my games (that I see in games like Trackmania Nations, Call of Cthulhu, some fps games also (sometimes in Quake 4 driving levels) etc. I really hate to say it but it is annoying as hell.

If I am assured that HQ AF will mean no more stupid line moving in my games, I am set. Lastly, its been a while but when my friend purchased an X1800 XL, all he said was the drivers are the worst he had ever seen and he was sad at his purchase. With time and lots of troubleshooting he was finally able to run all of his games and now he says "They are ok", as in never that, drivers are very good etc. He also *****es about CCC making his computer slow. Its been quite a while since I moved to ATi, so I want this to be a welcome change and NOT a disaster. I am quite happy with my BFG card, the only problem is AF which is by design and not a driver issue.

Lastly, don't make it a flame war. Opinions from user of both brands are most welcome. Thanks.

You are going to regret it if you switch to a X1800XL. The card is comparable to a 7800GT, your card is also overclocked by default, and honestly I don't think you will notice any difference in IQ, maybe a slight one. But no, IMHO, the loss of speed is not worth the extra IQ because you will have to drop the res and AA/AF settings just so the X1800XL can run the game properly.

Have you tried the XG drivers? They are meant to increase IQ with no performance loss.

No I have not had a chance to try out the XG drivers. It is just the annoying band line that moves in games with large distances. If there is some way to remove that, I will not make the switch.

More input is welcome.

Keep the GTX, better card than the XL imho

Wouldn't do it. 7800 GTX OC to x1900 XT is what i did and it was well worth it but from GTX to XL you don't get better performance - just the HQ AF.

If you want to go ATI, settle for nothing less than the X1900 XT or XTX. The latter is a great card, very fast and the HQ AF is nice. FSAA quality isn't as good as NVIDIA's, so if that's more important to you, stick with what you have.

Could not agree more. But,even better. There are some rumors of the X1950XT(X) showing up:

The english on that "slide" sucks, so it's definitely not ATI's. I'm guessing April's Fool day.

So I decided to keep my 7800GTX until I can afford an X1900XT. Thanks for input everyone.
