My 17" Display only displays up to 1280*1024 and if you look att Tom's Hardware review the FX 5800 Ultra wins in about every round in that display mode so I wouldn't exactly call the card a bad choice for me. The card also seems to work better with the AMD Athlon CPU than the Intels P4 (another good thing for me):
As ExtremeTech only reviewed in 1600*1200 display mode I'll show the 3DMarks in that mode.
AMD Athlon XP 2700+ (Tom's Hardware)

Intel Pentium 4 2,8 GHz (ExtremeTech)

But this isn't anything new...

Sorry, you'll just have to copy the address to look at the benchmarks.

If I were in the market for a new card, I would certainly wait a couple of weeks to see how the R350 looks. Based on all available data so far, it looks like it would very likely spoil the FX launch.

Here we go again :p

I remember hearing something similar about 6 months ago, but back then it was "Don't buy the R300, wait a few weeks for NV30 benchmarks". People waited, and waited...and waited...Nvidia asked...Are you ready? The people answered YES! Then after a long, long wait, Nvidia unleashed their card...a 9700 Pro wannabe :D

The GeforceFX is a perfect example of why you should buy what's out NOW and not wait for something new to be released. There's ALWAYS something better, faster and fancier (and sometimes...crappier) just around the corner. You do realize that once R350 is out, everyone will say "Wait for NV35", don't you?

Yeah, but one LITTLE difference....ATI means "weeks" as in "units of seven days" as opposed to "whenever we can get the balls up to release this nDustbuster". :p

A few weeks I would heartily recomend waiting, you ain't gonna be able to get an FX until then anyways. ;)

^^; In that case I'd suggest getting a monitor upgrade and pick up a 9700 Pro for under $300 in a month (with the launch of the GFFX I expect ATI to initially squeeze NVidia a bit with a modest price drop, but when the R350 ships, likely in March, I would say the street price on the 9700 Pro will definitely drop to the slightly sub $300 range). Sure it would be a little more than the GFFX, but then you'd get two upgrades out of the deal and have a card which seems not only to have equal or better performance at the resolutions your new monitor can reach, but also appears to have better image quality... ^_- and won't deafen you and people in the next room.

Although I'd put Ananananananda's as Chris Mathews (MSNBC, and for those not familar with him suffice it to say that I mean it as a compliment as I'm a fan of Chris Mathews' "Hardball". :) )

lol nice. Any other sites get any reviews up? Im lookin to pool them 2gether and get a good picture of it. Alot of my techi friends talked about it this mornin in class, we all think it has to be either a piece of crap, or an incredibly stupid driver issue. Who knows, the headlines in a week might be "NVIDIA releases update driver to fix critical bug increasing performance by 50%!"

Hey it could happen! If God walked the earth at one time this could happen i swear it, anything can!

Mathews is a sell out (to us conservatives)

Reilly is right on.

Limbaugh is the man!

Oh sorry, I got caught up in the moment.

Were we talking about the FX?

My wife's just been on the Yahoo Donny Osmond forum and says you've even bloody posted it there too.

Isn't there anywhere you havn't posted it ?

[Andy looks to see if The Village People forum has been hit yet by this lyrical version of SQL Slammer ]

Can I be brutally honest .. it's not actually that good.

Andy

I'll wait till the FX release and if no review has been made on the R350 i'll buy the FX. It's just that those drivers keep me away from ATI's cards. The release of the FX card is in the middle of February in the USA but is that the date here in Europe and Sweden too? When is the R350 thought to be released?

They do? I would say Tom's conclusion is much more positive than virtually every other review out there.

The real problem with Tom's review is the complete lack of screenshots, or taking any look at the image quality of the card - A major failure considering how the GeForce FX appears to be inferior in this area to the 9700 Pro.

They also failed to mention the obvious driver bugs that Anand and [H]ardOCP noticed.

So you want more crap ss like over at H? Anand had alot of nice ss? Yes it is obvious there are driver problems, hence everyone should know that new drivers will fix this and more than likely increase performance. You want to talk about driver bugs? Go look a the list of problems with the 9700 on the ATI support page, most bugs I believe have been fixed with the CAT3 drivers, a whole 5-6months after release?

Nvidia released these boards to reviewers knowing what state the drivers are in, so they have to accept the consequences. Just because 'new drivers will fix it' doesn't mean that it shouldn't be mentioned in a review.

I'm sure later drivers will fix the issues, but that isn't really the point - The point is a thorough, well-thought out review should mention any recreatable driver issues the reviewer had. Sadly, at Tom's Hardware they seemingly had their heads buried in the sand while doing the AA benchmarks, so totally missed the corruption that was occuring.

I agree 100%, thats why only 4/5 sites got to review the card, but it really shouldnt be called a review, its more of a preview, as the boards that the sites have will not be the ones people are buying, nor will they be the same drivers. Thats why they should be considered a preview, if within 3months the GF-FX doesnt improve, on both performance, noise and still carries a high price, then yes Nvidia is in deep sh!t, and if they do, why lets just say.....great!! R350 "might" be with us very soon, and Im sure Nvidia is aware of that, once again will will be doing the exact samething as we all have for the last couple of days :p Its fun, as long as it doesnt get nasty, which I am happy to say hasnt been the case.

Preview or not, the image of the product in people's minds is going to be based on these articles, regardless of what improves with it.

Although the circumstances are a little different, this is exactly the mistake ATi made with the Radeon 8500 - Even when drivers and performance improved substantially, and features like Smoothvision were enabled, the overall public view of the product was still poor based around the initial previews.
