Well, I would if I could. I live far out in the boonies, that BellSouth refuses to install DSL, but there is hope. A private company is looking at contracting with cable co, to bring 1mb Cable :D
I have been following this for a very long time. I worked for a ISP ( no name ) for a long time. Its basically a race between cable and phone.
Cable, They are trying to get docsis 2.0 vs 1.0. The 2.0 will be able to produce 100Mbs synchronous. The only downfall is they have to upgrade there UBR's CISCO universal braudband routers, which are very very expensive. I have worked with a cable plant and its ok but there is to many things to go wrong to cause ingress and outgress issues. Personally I think Verison will win IF they can get there service out fast. Comcast in NY was able to get docsis 2.0 going and yes they had a small group of testers on 50Mbs down.
Now for the downfall of cable for ex: if you have a Motorola Surfboard modem 4200, 5100 and up type this in to your browser 192.168.100.1 and you will see inside your modems webflash, now go to your signal page.
Downstream-Signal to Noise Ratio 38 dB< SNR should always be above 30
Downstream-Power Level -1 dBmV< this should be between -10 to 10+
Upstream-Power Level 55 dBmV < how hard the modem has to power up to send a signal should be between 30 to 55
Most modems use the 192.168.100.1 , motorola, ambit, RCA 245 and up.
Teh SNR is the biggest problem the more splitters you have the lower the # will go. The ped outside has to be clean and all the amps power all have to be in sync in order for your modem to be stable and always stay online, wich I can be most of you have had outages and how frustrating that can be. With FIOS there SNR would be prolly around 280 to 400 becouse its a total fiber network and you have like 1- 10th the amount of crap hardware that cable needs to run long distances. Not to mention there is NO ingress or outgress with fiber at all and no grounding issues its glass with light. I could list like a crapload of info whi FIOS is 100% better then anyother network on earth but I think you guys understand.
Phone Verison Fios, Now this is the future, They basically run fiber to your house, not just to the ped on the curb but to the side of your house, a total fiber network, they are gonna offer a TV box with IP and you will have vidoe on demand, autio on demand, phone, internet so on. So with a total fiber network there isn't a bandwidth issue at all. The only bad thing is there are not moving fast enough across the US only a few states have it, FL, TX, CA and a few others I cant remember. Another good thing is Verison bought MCI which owns UUNET which is the biggest fiber distro in the US I believe.
I think I would get the 30Mb - 5Mb connection, its cheaper then a colo server or a game server. ooh and btw they dont care if you run a server either.
BTW I am no Network guru this is some stuff I picked up on at my job.

Ahh, I want FiOS so damn bad. I live in a small town in Maine, and we just got Verizon's DSL here about 3 or 4 years ago. I'm with a local ISP, though. They offer up to 20Mb/1Mb ADSL2+. It's a little pricey. I'll have to live with 8Mb. :thumbdwn:
Any estimates on FiOS availability up here? :o
