For me it had to been Call of Duty 2 last year when it release. Never experienced intensity like that. For that reason, I recently picked up CoD1 cuz it was on sale for $10. About to give that a whirl.

Probably the HL2 City17 levels,
Battlefield2 64player Gulf of Oman map,
and EnemyTerritory/UT2004/Quake3 online games.

The first time I played Half Life

Was the most immersive game at the time.

Probably sections of Doom 3 at the beginning the first time I played, before I was bored senseless.

Well, a little side to this one, because it wasn't normal game play, but Deadly Tide...

It was an old DX 2.0 game, but had one aside to it. When the computer got faster, game play just got exponentially faster and there was no limits set on the game to prevent it from using "too much CPU time"... The thing was meant for a Pentium 90 on win9x DX2...

By the time we were talking about a Athlox Tbird 1 GHz, with 384 MB RAM, and a either Voodoo 3 or GeForce 2 GTS, the game was wizing by so fast, playing it was one hell of an adrenaline rush, just trying to keep up with it. No doubt, the original programmers never meant for the game to be played on such a fast computer to it. And there was nothing in there to throttle game play, once the computer became many times faster then what they designed it to :rofl

Hmmm... for multiplayer, probably the Firearms mod for Half-Life. That game got INTENSE at the end of a round.

Single player... its hard to say... I think some parts in Deus Ex were pretty intense. Undying had some intense moments as well. I cant really think of anything recently thats really been "intense". FEAR wasnt bad, but didnt really suck me in enough. Half-Life 2 had some intense moments, as did Half-Life 1.

I might actually have to go with:

Doom :p

... yes the first one :o

Yeah, that was really intense. I wish I would have mentioned that one also.

AvP .. first time playing the marine. Took me like 2 hours to get through the first level because I was too scared to move.

Doom .. I remember realizing I was leaning around in my chair trying to peak around corners or dodge an incoming fireball.

Lol, right now I'm playing painkiller, and it's pretty intense. When 30+ guys are running at you it's amazing. Other than that, I'd say Doom 3.

AvP marine sections
System Shock 2
Undying
Doom3
Call of Cthulu
Eternal Darkness

A special mention also goes to Red Orchestra: Ostfront which is intense in a very different way to the above.

Here's a couple.

AvP - marine levels
Battlefield 1942 - playing online for first time
Splinter Cell Chaos Theory - online
Live For Speed S1
Neverwinter Nights - fighting the dragon in Nordock online
Neverwinter Nights - meeting a Dungeon Master online for first time, that was truly scary
Wolf 3D - armored hitler
Doom 2 - some insane levels there

But the one that beats them ALL:

Call of Duty United Offensive - playing online on the Berlin map which is at night, ABSOLUTELY AMAZING and crazily intense. (nana2)

Most scary would be Doom3 or FEAR

Most intense UT2K4 vs max bots on Godlike setting
