View Full Version : IS the nVidia 6 Series dead?
Just wondering if i shpuld go for a 6800Ultra/XT or a 7600GT. They are both similarly priced. Does the 7 series have lots of new features or is the 6 series good enough to play Crysis (2007) or UT2007 at decent fps?

I would go with the 7 series. The 6 is done meaning they stop making them as far as I know. I'll be switching soon.
In terms of raw power however iv've been told the 6800 Ultra blows the 7600Gt out of the water,

When lots of a AA/AF come into play, yes. The 7600GT has only 12pixelpipes and 5 vertex units (vs. 16/6) but not only it has the improved 7 series pipelines which perform better, especially with shader heavy games and HDR, but it has also higher clocks. The XXX edition is clocked at 590/1600.

My poor 6600GT too.
I'm still thinking whether I should fork out the R400/$65 for Oblivion. I don't wanna pay that much for a game if the best I'm going to get is about 20 FPS.

If my 9600pro plays oblivion fine on med/low settings, i'm sure a 6600GT will do high settings. :p
I'm probably going to pass the 6800GT down to my brother soon, so to me it is dead. ;)

id take the 7600gt... performs faster than the 6800gs in games which is similar to the 6800gt in performance.... theres no way we can tell how any card will run crysis or ut2007... iirc they said for ut2007 that theyre aiming to get it runing at 1024 with high details on a midrange system when the game comes out...

with my old 7800gtx i was getting as low as 20fps (after tweaks) outdoors.... thres no way a 6600gt will run it fine unless its on low settings with low draw distance

Huh, my 6600GT runs just fine

With what games?
hmm, the 7x series has a few new features, and a little more optimisation, but no where near enough to put the 7600 ontop of a 6800 ultra. That said, where are you going to find a 6800 ultra that isnt overpriced? Most people are getting 6800GSs cause of both price and availability, and if they wanted the 6800 ultra, they generaly baught a 7800gs cause street price and availability was lower. ^^

I'd say it's pretty dead at nVIDIA.
I'll be upgrading from a 6800 GT to a 7900 GTX this week. :)

It goes to show you how little a company like Nvidia Or ATI cares about past generation cards. I have 2 7800GTX's in SLI and they run sweet. Im crayolas are buffed here folks.
Thanks guys. Yeah look still not sure. Which card is the msot future safe?

You are so wrong about the 7600GT not trumping a 68 Ultra - you really should check your reviews and benchmarks before making such a daft assumption.

OK to finally put this matter to bed could someone with a 6800GT or ultra pls post there absolute best benchmark scores @ ANY resolution or AA settings in ANY game or test suite so that I can show you how wrong the assumption is that a 7600GT cant beat a 6800Ulta.
im even willing to run my card at stock verus the NV40 card @ its best overclock.
any volunteers???

Superfly, yes I was only assuming because I thought the different memory buses (128bit vs 256bit) do matter at high AF/AA but if you say the 7600GT doesnīt suffer a huge performance hit with high AF/AA, then I trust you man! :) I know you donīt BS around or are bias.
What games do you have installed right now? If you have time and want to run a benchmark in a GPU limited one, maybe at 1280x960 (or 1280x1024), with no AA/AF, then with 8AF/2AA and finally with 16AF/4AA. TIA!

In NVIDIA's eyes, probably it is. A card is dead when a company stop supporting it properly. Judging from how the last few drivers (84.xx) work on my card, it seems NVIDIA no longer cares about the 6 series. Much how FX support became slower and more glitchy when the 6x00 series came out, it's the same deal now that the 7x00 series is here.

Hi mate - I've got Obvilion, FEAR, Q4, CSS, & NFSMW installed right now.
The X3 demo is good for Hi res/AA benching also.
TBH for a fair comparison I need someone with a 3500+ and a 68GT or Ultra.

your 05 score beats mine by around 2000 points if i remeber correctly ....what does your card get in "03" ?
EDIT: i screwed up ! (dissregard above posts)
3dmark03 12,500
3dmark05 5500
your 05 score bests mine by quite a bit ! but "i" knew the 7600GT was faster ;) right up there with the 7800GS alot of the time ...

also - you have a 78GT?? - are you refering to your old card - I hope so otherwise your 78GT is running rather slow!!
