Im buying my gf a new grafics card to make her oblivion experience a little better. Shes running a 5600 right now and its choppy, so im looking for either a 6600 6800 or ati comparable that will let her run at med settings, and for around 100 bucks, heres the problem, agp, so thats a pain in the butt and cuts down the options greatly. It would be cool if i could find a cheap mobo/grafix card combo so i could upgrade her rig a little, im running my overclocked/watercooled system and i can almost run everything on high, except for tree shadows, but I am running my digital vibrance at 100% wow that setting really kicks xbox's ass

she has a socket A 3000, and 1 gig of ram ddr 400
old foxcon board with onboard audio

aslo another hit against xbox 360, i wondered what that loading bar was for on oblibion and how stupid it was because nothing ever happened, but then i watched the xbox video and it jumps for like 2 seconds every time, god that must suck big :)

please no euros :)

Im in Europe and the cards around the 100 limit are:

NV 6600 128MB
ATI 9600XT 128MB (or 9800SE)

or:

NV 6600 256MB
ATI 9600XT 256MB
ATI X700 256MB

How about a 6600GT? How much can you find those for now?

i really cant find any that are AGP, im a nvidia fan boy but ill look to a ati card if there can run oblivion with at least bloom on

pci gts are 140 ish, and the agp cards are always more expenseive whitch sucks

what do you guys think about a 6200?

There are plenty of AGP cards in Europe. I dont recommend the 6200 at all, youd be better off buying an used AGP card off ebay for instance.

German newegg (for sake of comparison)

6600LE 128-bit 256meg AGP 4x/8x

shouldn't need more power than that for less than a $100

hmm well theres no socket As that have pci E so it has to be agp, and i know on ebay, most of the time theres actually website cheaper than ebay, so let me look for 10 min or so,

do they make gts in agp?

ive found a 6600 for 120 agp but you can get a nice gt for 140 pcie

Yes they make the 6600GT in AGP. Albatron does make an AGP/PCIe adapter card, but I would stay away from things like that (or boards that have AGP and PCIe slots).

like i said earlier http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130262

its a 6600LE, but still, its only $84 after MIR. the $45 you're losing with something more expensive could go to a different upgrade. unless shes a hardcore gamer instead of a casual oblivion player, upgrade to pci-e and split the cost of it all and get a 6600gt

le? low end :P

hmm well unless I can find a socket A pci E then i cant upgrade anything else because i would need to dish out another 100 for a new proc, which would suck. How much do those agp>pcie run?

hmm, i would say almost $200, but its socket a?heck, just get an agp card and let the system run out for another year and half, then build a new one, and part the old one

I dont know if thatd be worth the upgrade really... those have similar specs to a 9600 Pro. Hardly something Id recommend playing Oblivion on.

A 6600 (non LE) is the lowest I would go:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?Submit=ENE&N=2010380048+1067910551+1069609639&Subcategory=48&description=&srchInDesc=&minPrice=&maxPrice=&ATTR1=&ATTR2=&ATTR3=&ATTR4=2010380048+1067910551&ATTR5=&ATTR6=&ATTR7=&ATTR8=&ATTR9=&ATTR10=&ATTR11=2010380048+1069609639&ATTR12=&ATTR13=&ATTR14=&ATTR15=&ATTR16=&ATTR17=&ATTR18=&ATTR19=

But even then, I would still recommend at least a 6600GT if you can spare the extra ~$50:

that is true...from your link, i found this : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130220. seems like the best price/performance card right there. id say shoot for it, and then upgrade to a pci-e/s939 in a year or so, even though m2 and conroe will be out, it would probably be cheaper for 939.

hmm so still I wonder I hate to invest that much in an agp system thats already so way out of date

hmm Idea, maybe i can get a 939 cheap off ebay and get her a mobo with 6200 onboard which should outperform the 5600 she has

Wow that works out so well

at home i have the asus board with a 6150 onboard, that i cant use becuase it asked me to put in the cd, whitch downgraded the bios to a version that didnt support my dual core, so its been sitting around for a long time in my room. So ill buy a amd 939 3000 off ebay for 100-120, combine it with that $80 mobo, so im running -200 hehe, sell her old system for around 100 on ebay so for 100 bucks she can get a 64 bit proc,6150 onboard instead of the 5500, dual channel ram, and 2 extra dimms :)

note i know its harsh, but accorging to thg a 5700 gets 500-600ish 3dmark05, and so does the 6200, but ill oc the hell out of it and maybe match/beat performance then i could buy a 6600 for like 50 off ebay if need be

That doesnt sound like a bad idea I guess, but the 6150 onboard is probably a bit slower than a 5500. You'll still want to upgrade the video eventually if shes going to be playing Oblivion.

The good part is that PCI-E graphics cards are much easier to come by and wont cost you as much.

tell me about it, till then ill oc the hell out of it, the mobo sucks so bad, worst bios ever but it will do i guess, overall the system will be boosed, xp-64 at the same clock speed still give real nice performance boost
