"Intel ICH8 South Bridge is expected to be released in July alongside the Broadwater chipset. ICH8 is expected to have the same featureset as ICH7 with the inclusion of an additional 2 SATA ports (for 6 in total) and 2 USB2 ports (for 10 in total) alongside USB port disable technology, Intel AMT, 10/100/1000 Ethernet, advanced fan speed control and enhanced SPI (Serial Peripheral Interface). Support for the legacy Parallel ATA and AC97 audio technologies will be dropped."

Is intel really going to drop PATA support? I've only seen 1 or 2 dvd writers with a SATA inferface? Also what is SPI? I've never heard of it.

I blasted well hope not, I love my DVD burner and it's modded firmware.

Yeah dropping PATA support would be dumb with so few available drives using that interface. What few there are - are way overpriced.

Didnt the ASUS ones fail a lot as well?

Nah I say go for it.
PC's hang onto old tech for WAY too long - about time someone got rid of those god aweful ribbon cables.
also dont forget you will able to run Conroe on several 3rd party chipsets including nForce4.

I have to agree , good riddance the faster we move out the more better stuff will be available for SATA and super sexy thin cables.
I'd agree can't stand those big bulky IDE cables.I've been trying to find an optical Sata drive, but there are none in NZ yet.

You can always use a PTA to SATA adapter.
Exactly, I think the motherboard should come with a PATA to SATA adapter. Its about time we get rid of these.
Serial and Parallel need to go first though.

Yes that is why i'm very happy with the DFI Expert

Im running a ata->sata converter on my burner right now. I agree do away with the old tech just make sure there are adapters since pretty much every optical dribe is still ata as well as many hdd's
noe if only the floppy would die and be replaced with flash.
Yea, floppy needs to go now

RS232 is alive and well, serial needs to stay.
RS232 is alive and well, serial needs to stay.bingo...serial needs to stay big time...i would hate to have to go out and spend something like 200$ bucks just to add friggin serial support so that i can interface with a damn 100000$ router...

No serial must go away also , just get this if you must use antique hardware.

You still use PATA? lol.:D I fitted my new SATA Samsung DVD Drive at the weekend, I'm now purely SATA.
Heh.. Actually, parallel interface was originally designed to increase transfer thruput.
Ironically, we reached speeds so high, that the impedence? (been a while), high frequencies, and having too many wires next to each other was holding us back, and ironically is now faster to go serial again..

The only reason PATA drives still exist is because not all motherboards are compatible with them, rather they are only compatible with SATA hard drives. Supposedly there was some standards issue that caused this issue, but its been fixed since. If SATA only motherboards are sold, you can bet the market will start flooding with SATA drives.

Newegg only has the Plextor. And it's ridiculous ($99). Wake me up when I can get one for a competitive price.
This weekend my local BB had Pioneer DVD burners on sale for $39.99. Came w/nero express. I couldn't resist.
