French site PCINpact reports that an AGP version of NVIDIA's GeForce 7900 GT graphics card is due out "as early as next month." The site also received word that AGP 7600 GTs should follow by the end of this quarter. If the information is correct, end-users who still own previous-generation system with AGP 8x graphics slot will be able to update their computers to the latest graphics technology at $200 or $300 price-points depending on their demands.

The GeForce 7600 GT graphics processor has 12 pixel shader units, 5 vertex shader units, is clocked at 560MHz and comes with 256MB of 128-bit 1400MHz GDDR3 memory. The product is designed for performance-mainstream market and substitutes the popular GeForce 6600 GT product, which exists in both AGP 8x and PCI Express x16 versions. The GeForce 7900 GT product features 24 pixel processors, 8 vertex shader processors, is clocked at 450MHz and sports 1320MHz 256-bit GDDR3 memory. The product is aimed at sub-$300 per card marker.

that would be damn sweet, 24 pipe for AGP, no more of that crippled 7800GS stuff with only 16 pipe and low clock speed.

They will probably do 24pipes at 100Mhz just to piss off AGP users :p

I just hope the 7900 GT is 512 megs. Although that seems highly unlikely if they are targetting a $300 price point.

That will be sweet if its true, if so I guess I can finally use the step-up program.

This might be a reaction to Gainward's Golden Sample 7800GT. I also hope that this new card will sport 512Megs of ram.

I just wonder, single slot cooling or dual slot? If single slot, will an NV5 fit the card? Cause if I get one, I want to OC it like crazy!!!! :D

:thumbdwn: Am2 with DDr2 support will be out soon. For those with agp you can upgarde your system and even get dual graphics cards ( ATI and nvidia together in one system) That's one thing I've always hated about AGP. PCI even can support for multiple video cards. I hope AGP dies a bloody death.

screw AM2 wait for Conroe

Well, it'd be cheaper to purchase this new video card than a whole new system. And I do aim to build myself a new high end rig- it's gonna' be my birthday present to myself for my 20th birthday. Gotta' wait a year for that though. ;)

ROFL - I could so see them doing that :)

I really hope this is true - My dually Xeon box would love to have some power on the GPU end of things.

This would tide me over, its killing me waiting to upgrade my old system. I want to go all out on my next build. Thanks for the news!!

this is great news for the AGP owners, im still surprised the 7600GT is coming out on AGP seeing as it matches a 7800gs but costs £100 less.

Whats your problem exactly ? Apart from SLI/Crossfire PCIe doesn't really offer anything over AGP.

If it wasn't for the bloody annoying NF3 fast writes issue, I wouldn't bother upgrading my mobo in future for quite a while.

Those clocks speeds are pretty slow especially on the memory.

Aren't the stock clocks on the 7900 GT 450/1320? If so, the memory is only about 5% slower and the core clocks are the same. IMO, no big deal. :)

Overclockers.co.uk will ship to the US, no need to worry about that.

:thumbdwn: I just recently purchased a BFG 7800gs thinking it would be the last & best agp card to be made. While this new card is exciting and great news for us agp users it puts those of us who shelled out money for a 7800gs in a bad scenario :( . Some of us (Like I for example) knew what we were getting in terms of the 7800gs being a "crippled" card but coming off something like a 9700pro for about 4 & a half years ,you tend to get desperate especially when you have no interest in going the pci-e route yet. However I am still very pleased with my card and probably wouldnt have gotten this card (at least not right away) considering the card itself is very expensive..not to mention the importing fees which are a :nono: for me

Well, if we don't see any new AGP based high end cards soon, I just might place an order with OverclockersUK. That Gainward 7900GS looks beyond awesome. I bet it would overclock like crazy too. Just afraid to know how much the importing fee will be.

What do you guys mean when you say importing fees? The U.S. doesn't tax you for buying electronics from outside the country. My customs broker charges me some negligable percentage (something like .001%) for import duties when bringing in electronics. If you're talking about freight then it shouldn't cost more than $30 or $40 to Fedex a two pound box to the States.

As for me, I worry more about the exchange rate. As of today, that 7900 would cost ~$540 + "fees". You could pick up a 7900 GT and a dual core Athlon for that money.

Yea I Was referring to freight & 30 or 40 dollars more is still too rich for my blood. Importing fees, exchange rate,etc...the point is that card is just wayyyy too expensive when u factor in all the details and like u said,u could pick up something alot better for that price..hence why I am still happy with my little 7800gs

So what kind of drivers would you use for a 7900GT in AGP form? Would you need a Gainward specific driver or would the standard Nvidia releases work?

Yep. I seem to talk rubbish most of the time. I got the 7900 gt clock speeds confused with that of the 7600GT. Tablet time :D

Good question. I guess it all depends on Nvidia. If this is just going to be limited batch of 1,500 pieces then we may be dependent on Gainward, which would suck. If it's an "official" Nvidia SKU and several other partners carry it then it would probably be supported on regular Nvidia drivers.

So I suppose we must keep out fingers crossed for both distribution in the U.S. and good drivers. :)
