View Full Version : Help with hard drive failing
I currently live in a dorm room on campus at my college. The wiring in my section of the floor was not made for so many electronics draining the power i guess because almost every nite, the power in my section goes out, then we have to go to the circuit breakers and reset the fuse. If that wasn't bad enough, i think its beginnin to fry my hard drive. Would constant power outages cause this? I have already replaced one, by which dell sent me a refab. Now i am experiancing some early signs of a drive failure, BSOD and loading lulls. If power outages can cause this, any solutions besides unpluggin my comp? Im a CS major so i don't think i can do without my comp.

Get a UPS. Most should give you enough time with backup power to throw the switch or at least turn your computer off safely. It should also do a fairly good job of protecting your comp from pwer spikes.

Even a cheap $20 UPS, the 350VA APC are pretty good.

Yeah you won't need to spend a huge amount of cash, just something that gives you enough time to shut down

Did you make a SMART check of the disk?
You can use SpeedFan (brief) or Active Smart (better, http://www.ariolic.com).
Does it make any weird noises?
