I have the oppertunity to buy one of these two computers, I was wondering which would perform better in games:

Geforce 7900GT 256mb
Athlon 64 x2 4200+ (mint processor)
1gb RAM

or

Geforce 7900GTX 512mb (mint Gfx card)
Athlon 64 3500+
1gb ram
(this rig costs slightly more, but is still in my price range)

Does the processer make that much difference, I understand that dual core processors are very good, but is there that much need with a Graphics card of such caliber??:p

go with the x2 if the 7900gt isnt enough you can always go sli

The x2 costs less than the 7900GT though, plus I can't afford an sli mobo:( so I could later upgrade to a x2 processor if I wanted couldn't I?

The GT and x2 are more evenly matched, IMHO. With a 3500+, you'll be CPU bound and the GPU will be snoring.

The x2 and GT are also incredible for overclocking (see sig below :D)

go with the GT, youll notice a difference with an X2, but not with 512MB of vid ram compared to 256MB.

He doesnt have the option of going SLi. He is limited by that must be non-SLi chipset the motherboard on the computers for sale with THE GT.
How about the one with 3500+ ? Does that have a SLI ready mobo, PSU etc?

The one with the 3500+ will have the same motherboard, no sli. If I want a bit of a boost some time I'll just buy a x2 processor and an extra GB of ram, because all the other specs are more than enough. Plus it is a cheaper upgrade, because the next one up from the 7900GT is the GTX, it costs a hell of alot more.

True you could sell the 3500+ to get the x2 CPU ;)
