View Full Version : Guide to A7N8X Under Linux

That's my problem: i've got a Gentoo with a 2.6.4rc1 kernel. The problem comes with the sound of my A7N8X-Deluxe: i can hear just 2 channels (the front ones) and no more. Using the Alsa drivers with OSS emulation and setting with Kde (3.2) the Alsa drivers, i hear scratches and pops. So, turning on the OSS in Kde, that disappear...
Can anyone help me with the 6 channels?
(...i'm trying to take a look at your guide, but there's no more on that web space... :( )
Thanx in advice.
Well, by now i solved using just one jack and let the subwoofer do everything... but if i would hear a real 5.1 surround? And what about a Eax emulation or something like that for 3d audio in games? In the way i solved by now, i can't adjust the volume for each channel, because there is just one jack (stereo) plugged in... but if i connect everyone, i just hear the 2 fronts (and no more!).
Can you help me?

Fugu, have you tried this:
http://www.wlug.org.nz/NForce2Notes
???
Try and tell us if it worked for you :)
Hi Kenjiro, thanx for the answer! :)
Well, i've checked my modprobe.conf (looking the configuration of that site) but it remains everything the same :(
I've got neither the possibility to hear sound from multiple application... for example, if xmms is playing, every sound event is blocked, until xmms unblock the device...

This seemed like the best place to put this...
I got the A7N8X basic motherboard ethernet working on Fedora Core using the 2.6.4 Linux kernel thus:
Downloaded linux-2.6.4 source, made sure that forcedeth module was was selected before compiling. Compiled and installed kernel and changed /etc/modprobe.conf alias to 'alias eth0 forcedeth' the a7n8x basic mobo's onboard ethernet works on Fedora Core 1 test. So far no hickups. :cool3:

I am having similar problems to pretty much everyone else on this forum... This guide seems perfect and i would like to follow it before I screw up my kernel further...
The is one problem.. Where is the guide ????
The link: http://attila.stevens-tech.edu/~dkopko/a7n8x.txt seems to no longer exist.
Does anybody know if the guide is hosted elsewhere, or maybe email it to me ( soruop_nehpets@yahoo.com )
Many Thanks

Hi, I have a A7N8X-E Deluxe edition, i use alsa and intel8x0 in module, but i don't have multiple sound in the same time, i use dmix to fix it but this is not a good solution for me ... did you have any suggestion? A nforce-audio produced by NVIDIA can be builded for 2.6.X ??

I would really like to read the guide but the link is broken: 404 error. It would be great if someone could fix the link or re-post or some such. Can't seem to get the onboard NIC to work on my RH9.0 partition and need some help.
Thanks,
M.A.

Yes, it's down a while but still sticky and it seems no one cares. I wrote to the author...no answer. I wrote to the moderator...no answer!
It's very @~#!!?o0°...and still *sticky*
Which one of your nic's do you mean?
The Marvel gigabitethernetcontroller (module sk98lin) is supported afaik since kernel 2.4.22 and via marvel...just google, the nforce-net is part of the nforce-1.***.* driver don't forgot to load module!
And last but not least kernel 2.6.* has an alternative named "forcedeth"...which work's dependable.
hope 2 help

Hi All
I use SuSE 9.0 with Kernel 2.4.21-144 since this is the one that comes with the distribution. I exactly followed the instructions in the NVidia readme to compile the drivers. I installed the necessary packages to build them an then ran make and
make install. As a result of this I get some warnings about unresolved symbols and tainted modules but still it compiles.
Also there are several messages about a User "buildmeister" thats missing an that make is using user root instead. make install then doesn't put the compiled files in
/lib/modules/2.4.21-144-athlon/kernel/drivers/sound & .../net
but puts them into
/lib/modules/2.4.21-override-athlon/kernel/drivers/sound & .../net
and when I try to insmod, then this fails cause of unresolved symbols
I can absolutely not figure out why this happens. There are no errors when i do the preparing steps in the readme before I start compiling...
The only thing I can imagine is that the Kernel shipped with the 9.0 distribution has no builtin support for the build modules.
I would really appreciate if someone could help me.
I'm very desperate 'cause I want to use my nforce NIC and sound properly :ORDER:
edit:
-------------------------------------------------------------
BTW I'd really dislike to rebuild my kernel cos everytime I tried this, I had some success but some parts of my system always became messed up...
Ciao,
I have exactly the same problem. To make the agpgart compile with nvidia patch, I had to the line of the patch containing agp_bridge.num_of_masks=1:
//agp_bridge.num_of_masks = 1;
then agpgart compiles and can be loaded and work... until you use it.
I have an ATI Radeon 9200 (I was really stupid buying that sh..) so I installed the fglrx driver of ATI. Everything goes right during installation. But X does not start because when trying to use the drivers for the AGP and for the card, it arrives to strange error of memory allocation. There is obviously a big mistake for who use suse withe kernel 2.4.20... I do not know if it is an agpgart or ATI error...
I am considering upgrading to suse 9.1... kernel 2.6 seems to have less problems...
If anyone have some comment on this, it would be nice.
Thanks.
Given that the guide is now "404 - not found", and there are no known mirrors, shouldn't this thread be made non-sticky so it can sink into obscurity?

Hmm...
I installed SuSE 9.1 on my A7N8X Deluxe 2.0... everything went fine.
Net is working and Sound too... I'll give up trying to compile drivers that don't even compile... (I have the same errors Thoreau has)
Why is it so difficult to do a driver that works for the Release Version of SuSE 9.1 without upgrading something like the Kernel or other stuff?
Have to compile this and that.. download this package ... modifiing that file etc.
I'm tired of it...
Wouldn't it be possible to write an installer like the one for the graphics driver?
Download it ---> execute it ---> if neccesary it downloads and compiles the neccessary **** ---> working ... ?
Just a suggestion so don't take it personal
I am running Fedora Core 2 kernel 2.6.6 on this board and having trouble updating the nic drivers. Both don't work. There is a patch for the nics but for kernel 2.6.4
http://www.syskonnect.com/syskonnect/support/driver/htm/sk98lin_2.6.2.htm
Does anyone know how to implement this patch on a 2.6.6 kernel?
Cheers!
