View Full Version : Mandela accuses Bush of arrogance, racism
http://news.independent.co.uk/world/africa/story.jsp?story=374183
Nelson Mandela delivered a stinging personal attack on George Bush and his Iraq policy yesterday. Mr Mandela said the President was shortsighted and arrogant and implied he was a racist in his readiness to ignore the United Nations.
Urging Americans to take to the streets in protest, the former South African president said Mr Bush was a leader "who has no foresight and cannot think properly". Mr Bush, he said, wanted "to plunge the world into a holocaust".
Delivering a speech in Johannesburg, Mr Mandela asked: "Why is the US behaving so arrogantly?" He went on to accuse Tony Blair of acting like "the foreign minister of the United States". He suggested the countries were acting in such as way "because the secretary general of the UN [Kofi Annan] is now a black man. They [the US and Britain] never did that when secretary generals were white".
The White House brushed aside Mr Mandela's remarks yesterday, pointing to the statement of support for action in Iraq by eight European leaders.
The President was grateful to the many leaders of Europe "who obviously feel differently" from Mr Mandela, Ari Fleischer, Mr Bush's spokesman, said. He chided "people more comfortable with doing nothing about a growing menace that could turn into a holocaust".
But Mr Mandela went even further. Referring to the atomic bombs dropped on Japan in 1945, he declared that "if there is a country which has committed unspeakable atrocities in the world, it is the United States of America".

"who has no foresight and cannot think properly".
he only just figured that out? Come on the guy waved at stevie wonder:rolleyes: :D
He went on to accuse Tony Blair of acting like "the foreign minister of the United States".
So so true, and I am getting sick of it:mad:
Bush does seem to be juuuuust a little trigger happy....and listen George Carlin on the American foreign policy:D
Mandela doesn't have a clue. These lame, reckless comments have tarnished his legacy.
Mandela=butt buddy of Castro and Qaddafi.
This comes less than 2 days after GWB talked about (http://www.cnn.com/2003/ALLPOLITICS/01/28/sotu.transcript.5/index.html) 15 billions dollars to combat AIDS in Africa and the Caribbean.

he may be a bit gone in the head now, but it is still essentially true....no matter who said it

Mandela said U.S. President George W. Bush covets the oil in Iraq "because Iraq produces 64 percent of the oil in the world. What Bush wants is to get hold of that oil." In fact Iraq contributes to only 5 percent of world oil exports.

When you really think about it, 5% is a lot when you look at pure numbers. :)

Mandela's arrows of racism in the Bush Admin is hit or miss - it depends on who in Bush Admin he's aiming for. He hit a number of inches shy of the bullseye with the oil accusation - Oil is a reason but not THE reason. Oil is definately in the top 5, though. As for his volley against Tony Blair...oh, I can't argue with that - he dropped a 5 point buck with that shot! :D

Blair is our beeyotch and the world knows it.
By the way...what was your point about the funding for AIDS relief?
Meaning, we give some cash to fight a disease ridden country, but ONLY ON CONDITION that they don't decry our politics?
Take this money and shut your mouth?
I don't think so. It's a leader's responsibility to speak up in the national theater when his concerns arise.
Believe me...the Mandela administration aren't the only world leaders questioning Bush's actions.
Mandela has the right idea.
The comment about USA's arrogance in the face of the UN council isn't an isolated incident. We have ignored the rulings of the World Court a few times, to the puzzlement of the UN.
When you are considered a member of the UN, you are expected to follow the rulings of the organization, even when they contradict your votes and appeals. Look up articles on how the US ignored the mandates by the world court in the hearings about our involvement in Nicaragua.
Many times, we adhere to their rulings when it suits us, and ignore them when we disagree. The buildup against Iraq is the newest chapter in this sad history.
Our behavior would have gotten any other smaller, less vital nation expelled from the UN, were they to act as we do.
So don't give me any of that "We're doing that nation a FAVOR, how DARE THEY??" BS...
:argh:
*cough* opinion forcing * cough*
;)
Anyway: I will force my opinion on all of you:
I am a hypocrite, a hypocrite nananananana
Seriously:
Maybe people are getting sick of war and war talk? :)
It also may be that a lot of people are scared that Iraq is the next step up to WW3. I have heard a few peoples fears that this Iraq conflict will escalate and then Nth Korea will be next and then another country etc... Then terrorists from those countries will try and kill them etc...
Anyway, these are fears running through some peoples heads, not facts.

hmm... are you so sure?
he HAS won the nobel peace prize... he went to jail for many decades for what he believed... he was responsible in part to the ending of apartheid in south africa... and his opinions are respected the world over even though he is no longer a man in power... he never FOUGHT to stay in power when his term was over unlike the other 2 gentlemen you have so succintly banded together with mandela...
btw have you noticed how much bush talks and does not act :)
it would seem prudent NOT to believe what he says from time to time because it seems apparent half the time he himself does not know what he is saying...
What is it that causes these former Nobel Peace Prize winners to go all batty in the head? Nelson Mandela, Yasser Arafat, Jimmy Carter (not that Jimmy's not a nice guy and all...but man, his foreign policy is dim).
And let's not forget that Mandela's wife (and her cohorts in the ANC) pretty much invented the burning tire necklace (a tire filled with gasoline, stuffed over a guy's head, and set afire).
What is the right thing to do? That's what we should do, and screw world opinion.
Cheers,
JND

essentially true? What are you smoking. That communist idiot said Iraq has 65% of the worlds oil. What a idiot they at best have just under 5%. People take these morons serious. We backed his sorry butt and he spits on us. Well if maybe we were the USSR he might not say anything. Did he speak up on Afghanistan when the Soviets when in. NO! well he was in jail while his wife was putting tires on political enemies and setting them on fire so I'll give him a break there. For got what my useless point was. Cant think straight now or could I ever? bahhh
BTW have you seen South Africa's situation? What a finacial and moral baskit case that hole in the world place is. Take care of your own country first you, you..... you doodoohead!

Hey, lol, we need to find some way to finance this war, instead of using our wonderful American Dollars, why not use their oil to pay it off?:p
EDIT: Actually, Iraq does not have 65% of the world's oil, lmao, dumb pinko :D, Venezuala has the world's largest proven oil deposits;) I say we forget about all that desert crud and head south of the border:D :p

Mandela To Celebrate 1,075th Birthday in July
(2003-01-30) -- Former South African President Nelson Mandela said today he looks forward to celebrating his 1,075th birthday this coming July 21st.
The Nobel Peace Laureate earlier today accused U.S. President George Bush of wanting to attack Iraq to control its oil, which he said constitutes 64 percent of global production. But he soon forgot his anger as he contemplated birthday plans.
Mr. Mandela said he may mark the start of his 1,076th year with a party in Baghdad, Iraq, which he said is "a city of 3.5 billion peace-loving free people."
"I'm looking forward to the party," said Mr. Mandela. "It should be more fun than when I won the Nobel Prize for mathematics 287 years ago, in 1993.

So, let's get this straight - anyone that becomes critical of America is automatically a "communist" now?!? Sounds like 1960's Pre-Vietnam McCarthyism all over again. Hmm, I once recall watching a documentary where fashions in thought can be used to brainwash the masses. It was tough to understand though since the naration was in German .
