Yeah with an FX60 in there this sounds like good advice... dropping 1k on a CPU thats going to be totaly surpassed by new tech in a few months doesnt seem like a good idea to me.

I know its hard to hold back, but if Intel or AMD's next solutions stomp it into the ground you'll be kicking yourself for spending so much now.

A kick-ass setup .. what games are you planning to play in it ?

EDIT : oh & i thought 4GB of system RAM is not recommended if you are running WinXP x32 because it wont read them all correctly .. ?

Waste of time using 4GB in XP32, I found that out the hard way.

Recommendations noted. I might get XP 64-bit instead. From what I've heard it can be pretty bad with drivers though? Not many games support 64 yet do they?

I might wait a couple of months. Surpassed is certainly what I don't want after spending so much on the system.

The final cost is about $12,000, not including accessories.

I dare wonder if it's worth going for a bigger display..

The conroe looks rediculous! If I went AMD now I would probably wait until the new socket comes out. Initially they will be marketing the same CPUs for it, but the next gen should use it too.

Most games "support" it as in run on it, but there is nothing out there at the moment that will utilize it or run better in it.

I'm totally waiting on going 64 bit until there's a reason, and from the money you're dropping the extra $150 for a copy of both doesn't seem like much of an issue.

Sheesh, that's a boatload of $$$...xbox 360 675.00 plays kickarse games on a 55" Sony tv just as well as that set up. (nana2)

Wow..$12000

I would go for a bigger display though...maybe a dell 24" or the apple 23" or even the 30" for that matter...sweet setup though..

Wow... I dont care how much money you have, dropping $12,000 for a system like that makes me think you are getting out right ROBBED.

Where the hell are you shopping?

All of the parts in my rig dont come out to even one 6th of that price, and my system is no slouch by any means.

Also, go for one (or two?) of the new Seagate 750gig drives as a backup or something. No real reason... its just the newest tech and its freaking HUGE :p

Just so you all know...
Conroe is a load of horse ****...

The only benchmark tests were a simple cpu test and was compared to an FX-60.
2 major problems here,
1: It is a intel bias situation, seeing as intel was the one running the benchmark. Also on this note, the guys from Anandtech were there and asked to see the device manager, intel denied. The people present were not shown how fast the cpu was actually clocked at. There were no screen shots of CPU-Z or any other cpu diagnostic programs. For all we know there was an over clocked EE from that other **** socket in there... Judging by intels past i find it rather hard to just go "ok they told me so it must be true!!"

2: The benchmark run was a very simple and small cpu speed tester. The conroe has a 4mb onboard cache, the program is less then 4mb. This means that the entire program was able to fit on the cache on the cpu making the test rather invalid as it doesnt allow for real life performance. The FX-60 only has 2mb cache, so there for the FX-60 had to use the cpu AND the ram, not the cpu alone. Cache is a **** load faster then ram...
But when it comes down to real life performance 2mb more cache isnt going to make any kind of difference, especially in gaming seeing as most games require 300+mb to run, some taking up to 800+mb. An extra 2mb on the cpu will not make a difference when it comes to real life performance.

A second opinion has been done, cant remember where but i will link if i find it, it showed the conroe in a different benchmark program that didnt totally fit on the cpu cache. TBH i was exceited about the conroe when i first heard it, but now i realise that intel are just playing us... again...
The conroe not only was slower then the FX-60 in some benchmarks, it was up to 8 or 9% slower, this may not sound like much but consider that the conroe is a new generation of cpu, and the FX-60 is an old cpu that has been in production for some time now its rather embarrasing to intel imho...

If anything people should be excited about AM2, if AMD can work out their new socket to work better with the higher speeds then the lower latency then thats what we should be looking at...

But really i guess time will only tell...

i think he means 12,000 australian currency, which i think converts to 9250 american dollars... which is still alot of damn money. anyways, even if conroe isnt as good as early benchmarks say it is, i still think its better to wait a couple more months. That way u have ur choice of either am2 or conroe.

I would probably get the Dell 2005 (or 2007) FPW over the Apple Cinema display because of the card reader, USB/Firewire and such built in, and it's gotta be cheaper.

Also, the 5450s are pretty sweet, but I seem to remember reading in reviews that they get hissy at louder volumes and the rear speakers aren't exactly wireless. While there are no speakers between the sub/receiver and back speakers, but they still do require power cables to be plugged in.

I say just get the 5500s. Almost double the power and they get down to about $220 or less all the time.

also the Apple displays dont have a built in scaler (or they did'nt have).
