Can someone tell me why the 7900GT is, performance wise, better than the 7800GTX but over $100 less in price...? Sounds to me like a huge load of crap... I'm building a PC for a friend-- he wants "something good" for under $1500 and I noticed this phenomenon... I've already decided on the 7900GT and bought it .. but what the hell?

The 7900 GTis faster then the 7800 GTX in terms of performance. The 7900 GT is optimized further from 7800 and is manufactured using 90nm manufacturing process. GT's can overclock to quite high levels. Check on previews of 7900 GTX and GT for performance differences.

The 7900gt is cheaper since its using the 90nm process. it can get more dies per wafer which basically means it cost alot less to produce alot more gpus.

Agree with the above plus I pitted a 7800 GTX against a 7900 GT in NVNEW's review of the EVGA 7900 GT CO SC. The performance, although significant, is not massive in real world terms until you take in to account price.

7900GT > 7800GTX OC. I moved from a 7800GTX OC to a 7900GT and the performance gains were minimal, but after overclocking it to 570/900 spec (up from 450/1320), I could see that 7900GT was clearly the better card.

7900GT is like a 7800GTX 512 at 570/900. I will probably vmod it so that I can hit 7900GTX Spec.
