View Full Version : What is an "aging" card?

My GeForce 7800 GTX SLI is now considered by many geeks to be an "aging" setup. Funny how it has the exact same features as the new GeForce 7900 GTX. I guess because it's slower it's considered to be "aging." Since I don't like to upgrade everytime a new card is released, I'll only be state-of-the-art at certain times of the year. I would think that any card that does not suport SM 3.0 or the latest features would be considered as outdated. The ATI X8xx series and the GeForce FX series would be in that category. I'm sure there are people out there with an ATI Radeon 8500 who are still gaming with it. Since many reviewers constantly have access to the newest technology, they would look at anything a few months old as outdated.

Well, its the nature of the beast, really. If you can still game with a Radeon 8500 and you're happy, does it really matter what other people think?

They never said your card is outdated, they said "aging"

Still a great card, but in this industry things move fast :)

It's like milk. It starts aging as soon as you bring it home from the store.

Enjoy. :p

PS: Don't let it spoil.

Anything newer than a TNT card is aging from the day its built, anything older is just settling in.

It is an aging setup by definition.

It's a matter of perspective I guess. I consider whatever cards that can't run todays games to be aging. My 6800GT is two year old tech, but still runs games, so I really don't consider it "aging" yet. My friend has a 5600 Ultra card, which he can't run newer games on (such as Oblivion and GRAW). That card is aging.

The GeForce FX series is definitely showing its age. It was never a good series anyway as it was miserable in shader performance.

i've got a radeon 8500 and a geforce 6800 ultra.the geforce plays every game perfectly but the radeon still has driver problems(ati never learn) and in the newest games(that play) works horrible judging in fps.
however,on my radeon 8500 i could play hl2 with all max details and played perfectly.if all the games had good and optimised engines we didn't need to upgrade the gfx cards so fast.

My PC feels ancient... I can't run Oblivion at 2560x1600 with 16xAA/16xAF at 60FPS. :(
