Hey guys, I have been running 2 300GB IDE HD's as backup in my PC for quite some time now and it really just gets in the way a lot now. I was wondering if there are any really good reliable external enclosures (I plan to buy 2 of them) so that I can take these things out of my PC and connect them via USB. Also, if I did this, would I have to format the drive or would my data stay in place from the internal to external conversion?

Thanks!

Wow blue light Icy Box looked amazing that I would love to buy one but after I done researched to find out what the maximum capacity hard drives Icy Box supported, I found one on ebay as it stated support up to 250GB (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Icy-Box-USB2-External-Hard-Drive-Enclosure_W0QQitemZ8805402780QQcategoryZ96894QQrdZ 1QQcmdZViewItem). It really a big shame Icy Box external hard drive enclosures do not support 300GB sirplayalot look for. I found one another brand called Vantec (http://lib.store.yahoo.com/directron/nst360subl.html) has NextStar 3 external hard drive enclosures supported up to 500GB. :)

I have a VanTec Nextar 3 external HD enclosure and it's SATA!! But they made a version for IDE drives too. I'm happy with mine. My only complaint is it doesn't turn off when you shut down the computer. And when you switch the power off, it just cuts the power to it so the drive takes a while to spin down....not the best way to do it but it works I guess. And they look pretty nice and have no fans so are super quiet. Oh and the whole thing is aluminum so it cools the drive pretty well. The link AthlonXP1800 provided is the same drive I have (only mine is all black, not blue).

Untrue. I have an IcyBox IB-351US-B, and it works perfectly with my Maxtor 300GB IDE. Btw, it has both USB and SATA connections, really cool.

Here is the link to the product page in english for the 3.5" models :

This is the one I use (AMS). It has a fan but you can barely hear it. I run a 7200RPM drive in there and the enclosure never gets hot.

USB

The fan is a must IMO if you have a 7200RPM drive in there.
