View Full Version : Tim Sweeney: the man, the mystery, the legend.
Jaks who cares what others (ppl at other websites) think. People at nV news, staff or members of the forums have and will continue to appreciate the work you did. Thanks for the e3 coverage. It's been great!

I did a bit of digging today...I read the forums that linked to the story's on several websites. MOST of the people were NOT talking about how JAKUP was "chewing gum" they were debating his responses. Sure there were a few "haters", but there were also some people who stuck up for Jakup...All in all it was a great review...More in depth than any media that I saw got with Tim. Hell, he was drinking a coke while the interview was going on...He doesnt give a crap...And for the record, there was alot of Tim Sweeney bashing too! Can you believe that!?! Jakup, nice job (and I must say an excellent job filming if I do say so :P) Next year ya gotta nix the gum though :P
**EDIT** OH, and for the record, there were very few "bashers" compared to the freaking 17,000 + people that have viewed this thread :)
Still on the deferred rendering... Looked up few articles at the beyond3d (again). First the "free" AA on 360 is only free in bandwidth sence, the GPU still needs to calculate more samples etc. Secondly, the 10MB edram is indeed not enough to hold the complete 720p buffer. So the 360 tiles the output and swaps completed tiles out to the main memory. This obviously will cause some performance penalty and requires some effort from the devs to perform optimally. ATI says that 4xAA runs at 95% speed of 2xAA and any level of AA (@ 720p) will result in tiling of the backbuffer.
Deferred rendering (a broad-ish term) generally refers to a use of "G-buffer" that stores 3D position, normal etc. data per pixel. Presumably this is a FP buffer and has to be full resolution. 360 can tile render to texture surfaces as well but full res FP buffer like that would be huge and cause a lot of tiling eating up the bandwidth otherwise available to the AA. So the deferred rendering increases the traffic in the edram exponentially (Tim spoke of bad scaling) and the 360's 128bit mem bus becomes the bottleneck.
Also, for the tiling to work optimally 360 requires an early Z-pass which could easily interfere with a complex system like the deferred rendering.
Also got some info from Tertsi but man, trying to translate this terminology into Finnish doesn't work well at all :D Apparently there's other ... things ... that could interfere with all the G-buffers and AA'in 'n stuff..
Jacob has honestly felt bad because of all the bashing of his interview on other sites. But I feel very proud of him; jAkUp ROXS!! :D
I think Jakup did a awsome job, I thought he was smooth and tim was a lill nervous to me. Hell if I did the interview I would have forgot my own name I would have been so nervous ITS TIM for god sakes. I think the haters are just jealous bottom line. The only thing I think jakup needs is about another 25 lbs eat man eat. :D

Agreed, jealousy. Jakup did a great job and the fact that he took the time to gather our own questions and concerns to ask Sweeney makes it even better. Basically every question asked was what we as gamers wanted to know. Not to mention a couple of my questions were picked.:D
Thanks again Jakup, looking forward to the 07 interview if one takes place.:)

I dunno, to me Q&A is about questions... not presentation. I didn't do it to look pretty, I did it to answer questions :D This is only the 2nd time in my life I ever ever done this... :) I'm not part of the media.. I am just a gamer like anyone else.
I agree. I can't tell you how many "professional" interviews out there are pure crap. They sound pretty, and look all professional, but they don't tell me anything new! I want the straight up facts, and with your interview people got them.
i thought tim sweeney was 10 ft tall :(
that and he officially became my hero when he looked into the camera and told the world that the pentium 4 architecture "sucks"
nice interview
Hey man,
Nice Interview,
I can see that Tim Sweeny has changed his preferences on Graphics hardware, last year he was Pro Nvidia
now he says both are great! so it means ATI's hardware must have had something he liked.
anyways I got a small tip for you, when ur interviewing him u seem to look away very often, I think you should keep ur head up and look at the interviewee at all times, so they don't feel like u dont' really care, just a small critique.
Yea, it looks that way on camera, but actually I was looking at the next question on my paper :) I'm not good at memorizing stuff... hehe

Liar, you were checking out the camara man :p
I keeed.
It was a great interview overall. The questions were direct and his answers went straight to the money. Whoever criticizes your skills is a n00b. :D
Yea I know, the gum is off the list for next year :) At shacknews they are going ape **** about it... heh.
****em
if you want to be really famous next year :D (on shacknews and co.) dont lose the gum......get a big one and make balloons. just don't do it when you're talking so we could understand what u're saying :D
and in the end of the interviu....make a big ballon and add THE END on it (or nvnews logo or both) when u're post processing the footage :D (after effects should do it nicely) that should teach them :D
Or start out next year's interview with Tim chewing gum and you drinking a coke. :)

:rofl
Yeah thatd be awesome if you got Tim to reference all this complaining in the interview (by chewing gum or saying "want some gum?" at the beginning of the interview  ). Thatd be absolutely hilarious, and he seems like the kind of person thatd actually do that for you.

Can I just say well done on the interview, it's nice to get some casual stuff (and genuinely interesting commentary) from E3 without the usual marketing fluff attached. Of course others will play down the Tim Sweeney interview but that's because THEY DIDN'T F**KING GET ONE. keep up the good work, I really liked the format and it would be great if you could get a couple more next year <crosses fingers.>
Great job on the interview jAkUp:)
If you need a photographer with a D70s next time go ahead and bring me along ;)

I'd back you up, sword in hand, given the case. :D
