Hey folks...looks as though my company is going to hook me up with a Wireless LAN setup...In your opinion, what is the best/fastest setup for a wireless LAN?

Brands/models/spec?

There are eight-million different specs ( a-z it seems :P ) as well as some "special" features exclusive to a few brands ( "Turbo" mode..etc... )

There was a previous thread that hinted at this...but I am now challenging you guys to go out on a limb and pick a brand/model!

can you go 802.11g

Sure....why, is there some limitation?

802.11g is 54Mbps and backwards compatible with 802.11b, which is 11mbps. 802.11a, which is more widely available than 802.11g, is 54Mbps but is not compatible with 802.11b.

802.11g is basically BRAND NEW. Linksys makes some great wireless products (I've got 2 802.11b PCI cards), and I fully expect that to continue with their 802.11g lineup... (http://www.linksys.com/splash/54g_splash.asp)

Basically, 802.11g is HELLA cool. :P

Haha, I know, I hate running cables. So, what did I do?!?! heheh, just leave it on the floor. If people trip, its their fault :D

I would like to caution ppl who want to go with the Linksys 802.11g offering. I bought a 802.11g router and 2 PCI cards. Security features sucked and weird compatability probs. I ended up taking it back and buying an All-In-Wonder 9700 Pro.

If you want the fastest I would go w/ the 802.11a. It's a bit more pricey but at the 5GHz range you wont get nearly as much interference as you do in the 2.4GHz range (cell phones, cordless phones, microwaves).

Thanks for the help in the thread I posted about this a few days ago (Aheem pelly ;) ), I decided to go with the 802.11g. Upon closer inspection, Liksys doesn't even MAKE an 802.11a network card, so the 802.11a router would be pretty much useless to me.

Crap... I spent $70 on a 802.11b PCI card a few months ago.

I feel cheated. :bleh:

No offense, and please don't take this the wrong way, but I don't put too much stock in a comment where someone has problems and then simply exchanges that product for a completely differant, completely unrelated product. You didn't mention any attempts to get support, or any specific problems you encountered.

So no, you didn't warn me.

OK, then have fun with it! Make sure not to use your microwave/cordless phone/cell phone around it. For one thing 802.11g hasn't been ratified yet, there are 4 different 802.11g chipsets out there that may or may not be compatible with each other. If you don't believe me then go check out these stories on the subject....

Ahh..thats much more constructive.

A) I use Sprint PCS. They do not operate on 2.4ghz.
B) I only have one landline in the house, and thats corded.
C) My fiancee loves to cook =)
D) I am using a Linksys router with their WMP54G PCI cards. There is no 802.11b consideration and shouldn't be any issue with the "unratified spec".

Only crappy part now is that Amazon pushed the estimated delivery date up to the 21'st. Ahh well...means that I don't have a new toy to play with on the 14th (V-day) to help me keep my sanity

EDIT:
Just to clarify, if anyone cares or is interested, Sprint PCS handsets operate on a frequency range of 1850 to 1910MHZ, and the base stations work on 1930 to 1990MHZ.

No problems ( and I use Panasonic Gigarange extreme phones throughout the house )

Best $200 spent in a long time...

Specifically, can ANYBODY compare it to 802.11b... my 802.11b has been giving me fits lately, and I'm about to Stab It In The Head.

Being stuck in an apartment that is in an old Mill...I can really torture a wireless setup...

Bieng on one end of the apartment and having the router in the den on the opposite side of the apartment ( behind some walls ) I have no problem surfing the net...even when talking on the phone...

I am a VERY satisfied camper...

bleh came to the thread late :)

I woulda recommended D-link :)

it has higher data transfer rates than other comparable products... :)

is what we have in the house over here... 3 computers hooked up... no interference and excellent transfer rates...

still you should have just as good an experience with your stuff...

only thing I have a complaint about is a little static on my cordless phone when I am near the router :)

thats it...
