View Full Version : What's more powerful...

I was wondering what's more powerful:

a 512MB 7900GTX or two 256MB 7800GTXs in SLI

I know it could probably vary on each game and each manufacturer, but generally speaking.

TIA

Not 2 sure which is most powerful, but the 512 mb card will give you twice the memory overall. because two 256mb cards is still only 256mb in sli

For most games - which dont take advantage of the extra video RAM - the 7800GTX 256MB SLI is more powerful.

And massively more expensive... is it worth it?

sli is never worth it imo. but if you have to have the best it's the way to go. just uber expensive.

On most games the two 256mb 7800GTX's in SLI will be faster then a single 7900GTX with 512mbs,but I would get the 7900GTX and later on get another 7900GTX because more and more games will use that extra 256mbs ,like SSII Fear and OB and BF2.

The SLI setup will be more powerful, no doubt about it, but the 512MB card will have a deeper color dept. So, it's a trade-off either way unless you can afford two 512MB cards.

I've never heard this before, would you mind explaining it? :o

Color Texture, I think that's what I meant. Ummm...unless I forgot the term.

Very quick rule of thumb.

1. 1 x 7900GT/GTX is better if u game at 1280x1024 or below.

2. 2 x 7900GT/GTX way better if u game at 1600x1200 or above. Below this SLi is not worth it.

I've just bought a Gainward Bliss 7900GT Golden Sample @ 550 core 1.4 memory and it is awesome.

As I have an 19" LCD I am restricted to 1280x1024 but with 6xAA & 16XAF in most games it rocks!! In FEAR I can do 4xAA & 8XAF no sweat.

Very happy chappy!!!

Of course its more expensive , i dont argue with that. however he was asking about which is more powerful ?
if it came down to me right now , i'd go with the 7900GTX 512 instead of SLI 256MB .. for different reasons!

As far as i am aware only TC Ghost Recon takes advantage of 512MB really. BF2 doesn't that is a pretty damn ageing engine it has.
With 256MB or less in GR you are limited to med options you must have 512MB to run high. Shame really as am sure my 7800GTX SLi cards
can handle it as it smooth as butter at the moment.

Doom 3 & Quake 4 both use 512mb on Ultra quality. I can play both games at ultra with 4xAA and buttery smooth.

Cod2 is much better also and I think next gen games will need 512mb VRAM to run nice. See UT2007!!!

for people like me that run 1024x768/1280x1024, all you need is a nice mid-range card and you can play games on your native resolution with high settings ;)

i'd say that it isn't worth it, a single 7800 GTX 512mb will run every single game great, i haven't run into a single game that i can't run at my native res,1440x900, granted, there is a small tradeoff,in FEAR for example i disalbed AA and AF, same with Call of Duty 2, but the games still look great. this is just my thought, if my 6800 GT can play games decently at that res, i know a 7800 GTX 512mb will push out any game (except oblivion possibly) at 1600x1200, SLI definetly wouldn't be worth it (unless you have a 24" widescreen, 1920x1080 res) then i'd suggest maybe going SLI

This didn't come out right, sorry about that, my comment was actually directed at the member who had started the thread. From the way he asked the question (7900 GTX 512 vs 2X7800 GTX 256) I had gotten the impression that he thought the 7800 GTX was much less powerful and thus much cheaper than the 7900 GTX, which we know is not the case since both GTX's are similar in performance and in pricing. I was reminding him that 2 7800 GTX's in SLI is a very expensive subsystem, even compared to one 7900 GTX 512
